Hiding a key

Anyone here hide an extra key somewhere on their Taco?

Where? and what works the best? I've looked at those magnetic things they sell and they don't have enough magnetic power to do the job.

I keep the credit card key in my wallet in case I lock my keys in my truck.

 

I have the top Toyota alarm with the keyless entry. Never had to deal with extra keys.

The reason I started this thread is because last weekend my son left the dome light on, I fiddled around with it to get it to go off, had to try a couple switch positions. When I walked away (truck was unlocked) "click" it locks on it's own. Ok, so I unlock it with the clicker, set the clicker down on the picnic table, not touching it, and "click", she locks again on her own (about 20 seconds). I did this a few times, I then cycled the ignition on and off and now things are back to normal. If I had left the keys on the seat, which I've been known to do, I'd have been up a crick. I assume this was one of them things like disabling the various alarms where you switch things on and off in sequence to adjust the computer.

 

It's a plastic key molded into a credit card (plastic card). The dealerships give 'em to you. I used to have one, but never got it cut. You get it cut and keep it in your wallet.

Sounds like you have the factory alarm system - which may do different things with locking/unlocking. The keyless entry isn't that indepth. I know on some vehicles w/ keyless entry - if you unlock the door (with remote from the outside of the vehicle) but you don't open the door, the vehicle will lock itself within a matter of 30 seconds or more.

On older vehicles - back in the day - I used to tywrap a spare key underneath and inside the front bumper. But now with keyless entry - I don't worry about it as much. I have a cell phone and a husband I can call to bail me out.

 

Some alarms have automatic arming timed at 30 second intervals. When you disarm it with the remote-if no door is opened after 30 seconds it will rearm automatically. Apparently your alarm arms automatically shortly after you leave the truck too. This all is MY experience, I'm sure your new truck has a pamphlet on the alarm and its features

 

My taco re-locks the doors by itself after about a minute if I don't open a door.

I like the non-chipped key idea. I've been known to lock my keys in the car on more than one occasion. On an older car with no keyless-entry I even kept a door stop tucked inside the bumper in case i needed to pry open the top of the window to pop the lock. I guess I could have hidden a key... but the door stop seemed safer.

 

What's strange about this is I don't have a keyless entry or an alarm system, and now it doesn't do it anymore after I cycled the ignition.

 

I have my "valet key", in a magnetic box on the inside of my frame. I also have a thick zip tie around it.

I keep a spare viper alarm remote wrapped up under my bevarage console.

 

I actually do have a key in one of those magnetic things up under the bed. It's on top of the frame and impossible to see unless you are looking right at it. I wouldn't worry about the strength of the magnets either, I had the same brand of magnetic key box on my previous car, on the side of the frame, for six years and it never slid down the frame or even moved a little.

And it really does come in handy. I locked my keys and wallet in the truck once, and my wife lost her keys (found them a week later at my in-laws) and if the key hadn't been under there, I would have had to call a lock smith and she wouldn't have been able to drive for a week (or unless I drove some keys to her).

 

I've used the magnetic key holders in the past and they have worked great. I wouldn't be concerned about it moving or falling.

 

There are plenty of little nooks to hide a key under a Tacoma. On my last truck I had one hidden for 20 years in the same spot. I think I used it once. When all my keys finally wore out and Toyota said they couldn’t make a new one from my little key code tap, I used my fresh key from the hide-a-key box for the last year before I sold the truck.

I cut the rubber off and placed the metal part in the middle of a piece of duct tape and slapped it to a handy hidden spot. Done this on several of my vehicles. Never a problem and cheaper that the magic box.
