I have fridge and camp a bit with my truck and it has killed stock battery (it was just a matter of time). I just put in AGM deep cycle battery and now I am thinking about keeping it charged. I always thought I would do something solar until I start looking at sun availability in Illinois and all the equipment needed. Solar investment will be $1000 and up pretty quick and works great when truck is parked outside and in direct sun while the sun is shinning. The HO Alternator idea investment should be around $500 and should recharge battery in about 25 minutes a day/night with truck parked anywhere and might be used with cellular/programed remote start for unmanned recharging? The HO Alternator seems like the better idea for my needs with nothing else mounted on truck.

So, what options are available now for our 3.5L engines now? Google in my hands has not found any solutions yet....

I would look at Iraggi Alternators. He builds his own and has a good reputation, to include a lifetime warranty depending on which option you choose. I'm having a 200-amp one built by him for my Toyota MR-2 Spyder. When I looked at DC Power, Power Bastards, or Mechman they don't seem to build one for our generation Tacoma.

    Thanks!
I just sent them an email, I will keep my fingers crossed.

You can try DC Power as well. I emailed them to ask if they made a direct fit alternator for my MR-2 Spyder and they said they did but for some reason it wasn't listed on their website. I went with Iraggi because I got the lifetime warranty and he will allow you to trade in the alternator for $99 if you get a new vehicle.

DC Power says that the plug on our alternators are a funny duck and no one aftermarket has them yet. If this is true then we are at the mercy of OEM for now?

Go to any competent auto electric shop and tell them what you want. They will likely have a core, but you may have to get one from a bone yard. Also understand that if you get a higher output generator, and depending on how high the output is--and whether or not your actually use it--you may have to change out the charging system main fuse in the fuse box. Stock it is 120 A for the non-tow package models and 140 A with the tow package.

This is a time-consuming PITA to do as the fuse box needs to be removed to get at the fuse's mountings...

May be a bit off topic but are you not running a dual battery?

Your issue here may be the lack of battery. There's a few on here with OEM alternator with fridge and plenty of lights and no issues as they have a dual battery. If you're staying in one spot for a while as well alternator won't do anything. You would need a trickle charger from solar.

If I remember right if you have tow package you get a bigger alternator as well

Are you sure about that? IMO Idle charge really only works with diesel and PTO settings, Ie high idle. I’ve personally never heard of gas engines being able to do much more than simply create enough power to run the engine let alone charge when at idle, even with high output alternators. Not saying it’s not possible, just make sure you’re really getting what you want.
But, there are plenty of good alternator shops that will take you OEM alternator and do a custom winding.

One of my neighbors has a recent model Tacoma 4wd with the dual cab and shortish bed.

We were talking about electrical upgrades and I have been searching around for information on what alternator rating is stock on these trucks.

Is there a factory standard and heavy typical alternator rating number?

Anyone have an RPM vs Output curve?

    Thanks

    Harry

Edit - I think that I found the info using the links to the other thread.

Wow - these are pretty low output stock alternators. 100 / 130 amp.
