I've had a 55-75 mph steering wheel wobble since I bought my truck about 2 months ago (265/65/17 Toyo open country on alloy Toyota rims) I had brand new 4Runner TRD rims with 265/70/17 Duratracs installed yesterday and my front end aligned and the wobble is still there , maybe even worse . Going back to Big O to have it rebalanced tomorrow but I'm starting to think it might be something else. Maybe the driver side needle bearing? Could that cause the wobble?? Everything else seems and feels tight. Any suggestions appreciated!

I heard that its worth checking the bushings on the steering rack as they can become worn and may cause the wobble. I got the wobble on my truck too; I haven't looked at the steering rack bushings yet due to working all the time, but I have checked my needle bearings last week and they are still fine, no play yet. I suspect the bushings as alignment and re-balance didn't do it for me.

But I'm still under warranty so taking it in on one of my days off to find out for sure.

As same as you; it only starts shaking only at highway speeds

I did check my tie rods and no play there, will check the bushings tomorrow for sure. Thanks!

Could be a lot of thing....alignment, unbalanced tires, windy, bumpy road, you’re drunk, ....

It happens in my truck randomly as well. Been happening in since I got my truck 7 years ago and I’ve just chalked it up to it being a truck. I’ve noticed that weather does play a part, like if it’s too cold, it tends to shake more often ( not all the time) than when it’s warm out. Maybe the expansion/contraction of the joints or something.

I’ve just learned to live with it since it’s occurred with new tires, old tires, before alignment after alignment, before and after wheel Balance, before and after wheel bearing replacement .... I guess it’s just a feature of trout tacoma just like many creek and random popping noises

It doesn't happen randomly, always between 55-75mph on freshly paved I-70 regardless on weather conditions, old rims with old tires, new rims with new tires, before and after alignment and I haven't had a drink in 2 years. Nope, must be something else but I sure appreciate all your suggestions!

My 2015 did it since new, Toyota shop manager said it was normal.

It took me a while but i put gopro's under the truck to see if i could see any play... Didn't see any but drivers cv did have a lot more wiggle where it went into the front diff.

Turns out the needle bearing (that's a POS to begin with) was also installed improperly from the factory (pushed all the way in, not flush with the outside.)

Mine did not make any noise and it did not start/stop when i toggled it in/out of 4hi.

It's worth doing since it's a likely culprit.

I'm telling you I got the same damn problem haha, its only on fresh smooth paved roads that the wobbles starts to happen on the highway. I see it around 65-75mph, its enough to annoy the crap out of me, but once you get on some rough roads or an older part of the highway it kinda goes away. It comes and goes depending on the pavement, smooth pavement seems to bring it out more.

I didn't have this problem 500 miles ago; it just showed up one day. Alignment didn't fix it, rotated tires and rebalance 2 times didn't fix it. Checked the play in the driveshaft and cv shaft nothing, inspect ball joints, nothing. Everything looks good; The last thing I have to check now is the steering rack bushings which I'll bring it to the dealer since I did pay good money for an extended warranty. I'm at about 64k miles on my truck now, the last 63,XXX miles didn't wobble at all. So definitely suspect something is worn.

My driver side cv axle does wiggle a lot even though the dealership said it was normal. I've been thinking about the ECGS bushing swap for a while, maybe it's time to give it a shot!

Everything is "normal" to them... Loose steering wheel, wheel shimmy, coolant smell under the hood, rear main seal at 25k... Just a normal truck thing. They did fix the rear main though. The rest were my issues to fix.

2014 DCSB 25K, did the ECGS (needle bearings were shot), tire balance beads, rotated Toyo AT's, rechecked for loose everything on the front end (all tight),shimmy still there.
This makes no sense, for as many of these trucks that are on the road, there should be a fix.

so i have a '05 AC Prerunner with the same issues and as it gets colder the worse it gets....new tires, alignment, rotate and balanced....i'm lost and give up...if anyone comes up with a solid solution i'll give it a shot otherwise it'll shake til the truck falls apart

i figured that would be my next stop and maybe some wheel bearings since i got it used and now has close to 194k and have no idea when the last time they were done....but on the plus side they sound like they're holding up good...i'm more of preventative maintenance before i am wait til it breaks kind of person

Noticed it recently in my 15 prerunner and just figured it was the road since it doesnt do it all the time. But i also noticed it doesnt do it in the same places on the same road on my commute. Mine is very minimal when it does it. I guess ill add that to the list of shit to tell the service writer when i take it in before it hits 36k.

Thanks to Martin at 4 Wheel Drive Outfitters here in Davie, and John and his guys at Davie Tire Outlet, shimmy is gone.
Have your alignment shop set the TOE to ZERO.
Most shops want to just set it to what Toyota specs call for.
