I found mention somewhere that this is an customization option in techstream. I had it connected on Saturday for a little bit to change a few things I knew I wanted, but I didn't notice any setting for the HSA. I'll have to look again tonight and see if it was in one of the systems I didn't go into. I also had the truck off so maybe some of the subsystems were not available. It may also be unavailable to configure in the 6mt trucks.

I also would like to disable the hill start assist. It's caused me to almost stall the engine on more than one occasion, like when I'm ready to go but the HSA says 'not so fast'. I find myself waiting for the computer to release the brakes, then I can go.

The brakes are released as soon as you touch the gas pedal.

The HSA is canceled when the gas pedal is pressed, but that doesn't mean the brakes are instantaneously released. I find there is some lag between me pressing the gas pedal and the brakes releasing. It is annoying when my feet are faster than the truck.

True that.. I need a "full retard" button for those times when I get retarded and then push the button and I come back to reality. Have to mount it on the drivers side of steering wheel so my wife couldn't reach it.

I have an off-road. HSA is letting the clutch out 85% of the way.

I don't like having to replace my clutch any more often than necessary. The only time my clutch slips significantly is starting in 1st gear and when I feel like being speed racer.

My sport MT does the same thing. It can be annoying some times.

Gezz. Drivers training must have changed since I was in high school. The first day I started we were in a Toyota Corolla with manual transmission. Three of us and the instructor. I was driving. He took me up a very steep paved hill, made me stop half way up, then take off agin without using hand brake or stalling the engine. Little did he know I'd been driving since I was 10 years old living on a farm. I took off as smooth as glass. The other two guys couldn't even take off on a level parking lot. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard. I guess drivers like they were are the reason Toyota has the hill assist thingy. Thankfully my TRD OR doesn't have it nor do I need it. Youngsters!

This is how it should be. Of course that corolla probably had more low end to start out on a hill than our trucks do.

Yeah. It has. They don't even bother with manual transmissions any more. And most of the training is teaching the little fuckers to get off their phones. It's a sad, sad state of things.

Since we are talking about drivers ed.... Yeah, when I took it in HS around 2000 we had a Ford Taurus, no manual. My teacher was ex-military, infer from that what you want. The lesson on winter driving and skid recovery was interesting. We prepped in the classroom with the usual discussion and theory. During the road portion of the class, the deal was that we would drive on a snowy slippery road and he would use his chicken brake to lock up the rear at some point without warning. I realize this sounds dangerous, but it was always done where it was safe to do so and we were told before starting out that it would happen. We were required to keep control of the vehicle and bring it safely to a stop.

I had been driving a manual transmission for a year already with my parents and had a bunch of practice getting in and out of our steep driveway. I was also very familiar with the E-brake in my Honda Accord. :D There were more than a few pucker moments with the other students though.

Probably the same team of Morans at Toyota that decided we can't have a manual transmission paired with a long bed, or that I couldn't get my truck in Blazing Blue Pearl with a manual trans........

And my Off Road w/manual transmission definitely does NOT have any sort of hill assist. I have a decent sized hill at the top of my street that I take every morning leaving my house for work, and if I'm not the luck first vehicle at the light, I get to start off on a heck of a slope, if I don't make the light, that is.

All these guys hating on the hill assist! I don't get it. Make no mistake, I can drive a manual lol but my driveway is short, steep, and I back right up to my garage door. Getting the Tacoma out with no ebrake is a bitch. We have a button for clutch start cancel, so why not have one for hill assist on the manuals?!
The hill assist in our manual GTI is less necessary as the car is so light and has a slick German clutch.

    this and that...
hill start does exactly what it sets out to do. you dont even need a button to engage it. i love mines. you can go on the steepest hill and just let go all your reservations, cause the truck is gonna stand fast until YOU ready to go; no riding the clutch, no ebrake launch, no backseat drivers, no mfs hugging your six. nothing.

I'm going to zombie this thread.

I thought Brake Booster was part of the Crawl Control stuff. The MT's don't have crawl control (nor do the sports), so wouldn't then all MT's have hill start assist?

    Not really.

The non-OR / non-Pro MTs have a typical vacuum brake booster. From what I can tell, the HA is in the ABS unit (right side of the engine bay). It seems to be a line lock on the rear brakes only, works both nose up in 1st and nose down in Reverse, and holds absolutely firmly. As far as I know, there is no way to disable it, which I would like to do, esp with the 2LM.

The OR / Pro MTs have an electric brake booster. They don't have HA. Kinda weird, considering the system.

Oddly, the OR / Pro ATs have HA, but it seems to be tied to the AT itself and the ABS system. They get motion first, then ABS noises while not really halting the motion.

    Strange stuff.
