That is crazy. Good luck cleaning that stuff up. You can try steamer for what you can see.

It's pretty gnarly! The buildup comes off pretty easy, but getting rid of the varnish is interesting.

Ah, and here is another vid from that Subaru we did a while back. Screw a machine shop, we plane heads ourselves!

Ya know, it might be time to invest in a slide hammer. That's pretty nifty. I never really thought to do that.

Well my neighbor just got this Studebaker with a 327 in it. Says he's got some work for me to do to it. For sure putting a new carb on it and he wants me to do the valve covers like I did mine on the Tacoma- mirror finish.
So expect more of this beaut here soon.

Managed to get a little bit done on that 4runner's 3.4 this weekend, cleaning parts as we went.
Bearings don't look horrible. Some scoring, but no copper showing. Edit: Not reusing them, just glad to see they are in relatively good shape despite the abuse this thing went through.

Still have quite a few of these nasty suckers to clean. It's a tedious task.

How many miles on that motor? I would still replace those bearings if you can.

We'll definitely be replacing em, only a couple bucks. Was just pleased to see they are in decent shape. It's somewhere around 240k hard miles. Neglected for most of its life until my buddy got ahold of it five years ago.

Wow for 240K miles that is very good. Yeah I would go all new parts wherever you can, Remember to clean the sludge traps everywhere

Yes! This thing is nasty as all get-out, but despite the abuse and all of the oil/trash deposit crap, it seems to be in great shape.
Definitely gonna have to try cleaning the sludge traps like that guy in that video you posted did. That was neat!

Yeah that sludge looks horrible, any idea what engine oil was used ? Looks like some cheap dino oil.

Are you going to seat valves ? How is the head looking ?

I have no idea what the previous owner used, but Robert uses the same oil I use: Castrol Edge synthetic.
We'll be doing our backyard valve job. I'll have to post pics/vid when we do that, it's pretty cool.
We have not actually held a straightedge to the heads yet, but will be doing so. So far, we are still cleaning all of the crap out of em so that we can see if there is any visible sign of damage.

It's been slow moving, but everything is torn down now. Now it is time for straightedges, feeler gauges, micrometers, and lots of parts cleaning. Going to clean everything as best as we can by hand, but we may be dumping everything in our friend's hot tank.

We achieved better results with a kerosene bath than the hot tank did. We were pretty much expecting magic from the hot tank. Kerosene and gas are amazing. We use kerosene to soak parts long term, and gas to do quicker cleans, such as on small items like valves.
