I'll agree with that last quoted quote. That's the reasoning for my statement earlier about looking cool. I don't see a need anywhere in the states that would call for a snorkel on a DD. a dedicated off-road rig, perhaps. Maybe a DD weekend machine, perhaps. The dirt roads of Australia go on for 1000s of miles. The dirt roads in the states are short. The Aussie roads in the dry season are bad. Rarely a 'dry' season here of the likes that'd cause the need for a precleaner.

But the water fording capability along with the cold air characteristics is what's got me interested. At the price point it's as cheap as a CAI, too.

Yes, snorkels definitely have a strong visual aesthetic. Here in Cambodia, my reasons were: water (flooded roads and river crossings), dusty (though not as bad as Australia I'm sure), and for colder air (aaaalways hot here).

I'm trying to find a pre-cleaner, but haven't had any success at the junk yards yet. I'd like to try a cheap on out to see if it makes an improvement. My airfilter always has a nice red tinge to it.

Right now I run with the ram topper turned around backwards. It keeps the monsoon rains out, and hopefully cuts don't on some direct dust.

I've owned my truck for 10 years and put 170,000 miles on it, it hasn't seen a shop in 8 years for anything but alignments, everything else from the timing belts and rack I fabbed to carry materials over my tent to mounting my own tires and installing the diffs I've done myself. It's daily driven and carries 750 lbs of lumber on an average day. It's been from Alaska to San Diego, the Grand Canyon to Saskatchewa and all points in between, several times. Every upgrade has been well thought out based upon need from my Light Forces after driving the AlCan at night to the need to build my bumper because I kept running into shit. This is my trucks average weekday.image.jpg This is my truck on a good weekendimage.jpgI've seen a need for a snorkel. That's what this thread is about, not whether you judge me needing one to look cool or not.

Well, put it to a test then. The next road trip you make do a tank with it forward and a tank with it 'cool' and track the mileage variances.

I'm not interested in driving with the head back for any duration of time, certainly not to 'look cool', it's not like I roll around like some douchie jeep guy with my bow shackles on the bumper in the city. I only suggested it as a possibility for those concerned with heavy rain and snow, and if that were a situation I was confronted with it'd be an option for me, if not you then no worries.

I imagine just having the snorkel over pulling from the fender will help me from killing air filters or fouling my MAF sensors when following guys on dusty roads, that's all I care about. I've never had to cross any water that was higher than my front bumper, and don't think I'd feel good about it, but it'd definitely be added piece of mind

When they say heavy snow, precisely what do they mean?

I have to drive my Tacoma to get to my contract locations for plowing more than I drive the plow truck there. I'd hate to be sidelined at 3am on my way to plow a hospital parking lot because my snorkel sucked in too much snow.

I think they mean enough to pack the opening of the head if the snow were coming down hard enough, in effect restrict the truck from getting air

That's what I was thinking as well. We get those heavy, wet snows here more than the light fluffy stuff.

Has anyone experimented with mounting a different pre- than the one that comes with? The Safari Snorkel has drains built into it to hopefully mitigate the chance of water entering the intake. Something like this?
    http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Rep...sbs_263_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0VZTPTPRHG2JS5FB979C

I don't see from the Amazon cheap-o pics that it has the similar drain setup to the actual Safari Snorkel.

Since the majority of what I'd be doing is warm weather off-roading with a decent amount of dust, these are interesting instead of going with a proper pre-cleaner http://www.amazon.com/Large-Droopie...qid=1439939518&sr=1-4&keywords=safari+snorkel

    And this: http://www.amazon.com/Ram-Head-Cove...bs_263_10?ie=UTF8&refRID=194JZ72RP7M2SPSBGDPW

Any thoughts? Anybody played around with them?

    Here's from the OP's posts.

    Here's a Safari.
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1439949001.225326.jpg

They both are shaped similar, but the Amazon one doesn't have the holes in it. My understanding is that these hole allow the water to be 'sucked' into the hood with the air. Then the weight of the water will keep it momentum and hit the back of the hood and run out the holes. Something of that nature, but not exactly. The powdery snow would just get sucked in like dust would. Then it accumulate in the tubing somewhere and warm up from the engine heat turning to water. Then that'd cause an issues in the airbox and intake.

At least that's what I take on the matter.

Lots of dust and custom dents, Check Build
Got mine installed today. Pretty straightforward install really.

My solution to the shitty tube. Left the factory intake tube on after cutting a bit of it off, and then I unbolted the 90* piece going into the airbox so it could be rotated. I only needed a very short piece of the rubber tube to connect the two. As is it's probably not water tight, but it is dust tight, which is what I wanted the snorkel for anyways.

Nice work! That was going to be my next plan if the coiled wire didn't work. I wouldn't trust mine to be waterproof either, but I'd say it is more splash proof than before. Not to mention the dust, which is another reason why I did it

Yes they are. You have to use thick washers to clear but the setup still works

Wtf?!? I'm looking on Amazon and these things appear to have just disappeared overnight. Every shitty eBay seller is shipping from China and then says they have like 3 left, seriously disappointed, this was going to be something I purchased fairly soon.

They ship from China and the reviews are pretty sketchy, and this isn't a comforting thing to read when you're thinking of making a purchase-

We will NOT be responsible for any delay during delivery including but not limited to customs postage checking, strike, force majeure etc.

As a buyer, it is your duty to pay the tax when you make a order from abroad. Our price does not include taxes, VAT, or other hidden charges.

Might be this is my only option at some point, I'll keep checking Amazon for a bit
