Just got back from Ecuador, first time in South America. Pickups everywhere, from little El Camino style pickups based on the Datsun 1200 sedan sold in the US in the early ‘70’s, to late model Ford SuperDuties. But most are short-bed double cabs, many diesel and 4wd. The most popular are the Chevy (Isuzu) DMax, but Hilux is probably #2. The Chinese Great Wall Wingle is probably #3. And I got the chance to ride in that holy grail for US Tacoma owners, a diesel 4wd Hilux. Compared to a US market late model Taco (I own a 3rd gen) it’s much simpler inside, roomier feeling with no bulky center console and slimmer seats, manual transfer case lever, etc. The diesel wasn’t particularly quiet, and though it obviously pulled well from low rpm, it didn’t seem super-powerful and required frequent upshifts as the revs rose. Of course, some of that may have beeen the driver, the load (5 passengers plus a lot of luggage), not to mention that Quito is around 9000 feet above sea level. Here’s a pic of the silver one I rode in, plus a newer 2wd 2.7 gas truck with window sticker.

A beautiful country for nature and landscape, as well as history and culture, friendly people, good food ... and lots of truck spotting!

Looks slanted, like a Tacoma in italics. TACOMA

yeah the front end looks more like a Ridgeline and we love our beefy grills, but imagine actually being able to see over it when cresting a hill...
