Would have thought that would transfer the impact to your frame. This hitchhammer is rubbery.

There are states where having an object in your receiver when not towing is illegal.

Naturally not everyone cares, but its food for thought for those who might.

It's not a step, but somehow it's supposed to take a parking lot bump? More shit designed to part you of your money.

I have something that I like to call a harpoon in my hitch. It’s a “hitch step” that’s solid steel and can act as a recovery point if needed

I've never heard of such a thing and frankly I'm glad we don't have such a law here. What is the purpose of this regulation of personal behaviour? Protecting shins in the parking lot? Reducing radiator damage in a rear-end collision? If you happen to know the "why" I'm seriously curious about it.

Like many laws, I'm not sure how it came to be.

Likely some influential person busted their shins on the hitch of someone they didn't like anyway. :D

But one of the keys is is your plate visibility blocked in any way? Like the guys that have multiple balls in their bumpers do. So rather than that being a judgement call based on does it or not, just make it illegal. Which makes no sense since you can't see it when towing anyway.

They have the law because it can cause extra damage to a vehicle who rear ends you. Such as punch a hole in the radiator (which I’ve done :D)

Well, compressive loads are alot different than shearing loads when it comes to rubber.

Just look at engine mounts, they are rubber and hold a engine in. But in a collision they will break due to the direction they are being stretched.

I can see this being nice in a city where street parking causes lots of bumper damage.

It’s highly effective in low speed rear end collisions. The above is clearly a copy cat. Perhaps it is an effective alternative to the original for the same type of buyer who prefer cheap Maxtrax clones to the proven original.

To those complaining about it getting destroyed off-road, the hitch pin is quickly removable and the step goes into the bed to patiently wait for your adventure to end and a return to the mean city streets.
