Hitch Pin (Lock) Minimum Width for Shaft Section

    I have a '17 Silver TRDOR DCLB on order. I will be putting the Smittybilt Beaver Step in the hitch and want to secure it with a hitch pin lock.

    Reading reviews on Amazon for hitchpin locks, one person said they had a '16 Tacoma and the lock was too short for his application.

    So, I'm wondering what the minimum width is of the hitch pin lock straight shaft component of the lock? This should be based on the outer width of the hitch connection, which I can't measure since I don't have the truck yet.

    Be that as it may, my receiver lock that fit my super duty hitch was too short for my Tacoma.

    Fleshlight and an old Farrah Fawcett poster.
    Same as my 2011 Tundra was. It's a little over 2 3/4" so you Need about a 3" span or more to be comfortable. Not easy to find as so many don't publish that measurement.

    you need something longer than normal... I have put 2 locking pins in and they are both too short.....

    but the standard "L" shaped pin that secures with a cotter pin works just fine until I can find one long enough.

    I've looked at getting one of these, they use your truck key so you don't have to worry about losing the small keys (unless you lose your truck keys often or have the key fob). They also make a cable lock and toolbox locks as well.

    A 5/8 grade 8 bolt, cheater bar tight, is cheaper and almost as secure as a lock, it won't rust up and you won't loose the key. :rofl:
    Hitch theft is a "crime of opportunity" and most folks don't walk around with a couple of 7/8" wrenches and the 5-10 minutes it takes in a parking lot is too much time.
