Every house and gun owner is different......yes the wife and wild dog Comment was a joke but if you don't have to clear any rooms or move around you house a shotgun is a good choose everyone thinks they're a hard ass before shit happens but when your life is really on the line most of the Internet ninjas will be pissing their pants and calling 911. Like I said in earlier post I don't choose to use a shotgun for home defense but a person in a barricaded position waiting for someone to save them it's a damn good weapon. As far as shooting through walls our kids pellet gun will achieve that but the energy lost traveling beyond the walls will be LESS likely to cause any serious damage. But if you think 00buck is needed to stop a bad guy I'll stop trying to make my point.
For the record I sleep in the family room will a Glock 22 so I'm done talking about shotguns.
Know the system you choose and practice!

I don't think 00 buck is the only option for stopping a bad guy with a shotgun. It's just one of the more reliable options for stopping a fight in that platform.

Agreed, any weapon is a good choice.

I didn't say 00buck was needed I just said any buck is needed, I only used 00buck for the numbers because of how common it is. Anything is better than nothing but if your buying and loading ammunition for the purpose of home defense in a shotgun I don't see why you wouldn't go buck. I just think the "shotgun is the best" is a bit of a myth in the home defense world. I didn't say it shouldn't be used just that people should consider their environment before labeling something as best. For people without kids in the environment a loaded shotgun leaning against the dresser or bedside is a pretty darn good choice.

Every thread on TW repeats itself every 6 pages, just with different people, I assumed you knew.

I've got Redbone hound and a Weimeraner(spelling), a scent hound and a sight hound. Nothing moves in my yard that they don't "alert" me about. It gets aggravating at times, but is quite handy more often than not. Whenever they finally die I'm getting a flock of guineas. At least they'll procreate and I can eat them, too. Crawling bugs will be at minimum and they will do the same as the two hounds I have now. Plus the neighbors will hate them more than me.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
I can deter any threat with #6 bird shot at any defensible self-defense distance.
    Buckshot just sounds macho.
Shoot a wet phone book at 7 yards with lead #6 and tell me it won't cause serious damage to a human body.
I have this same debate over bear defense and I guarantee that any bear shot in the face with an ounce and a quarter of #6 is going to have a hard time finding and attacking what it was after originally.

#6 to the face, maybe. Aside from that the FBI ballistics lab says your wrong from a scoentific standpoint. 0 expansion and incredibly shallow albeit nasty looking wound channels are what you can expect from all birdshot.

When it comes to immediately stopping an attack in either a defensive or offensive role look to law enforcement and choose accordingly. A minimum penetration depth of 12" in calibrated ballistics gelatin is required for a reason. Leave the birdshot to the birdies!

My Home defense/camping pistol is a Ruger Security Six .357 MAG, I keep it loaded with .38's for home defense. Love the old gun still fires great and it is accurate. Many other guns though...

Supposed to be according to whom? The people selling them? Of course they claim to have revolutionized small arms rounds. Lots of these lightweight 'revolutionary' rounds have been popping up as of late & the overwhelming independent (key word here) reviews are in: junk.

Summary: there's no magic bullet that replaces training, preparation & execution of plan should the need ever arise.

My 9mm is there to get me to a long gun. I voted for shot gun, because if you shoot an intruder you will lose your gun indefinitely to the police. I have a cheap H&R pardner pump that is reliable and is the gun I am prepared to lose (in the event I hopefully never have to use) in a break in/home invasion.

Literally every defensive round manufacturer has the same photos showing the same tests and the same 100% expansion evidence.

Not every defensive round manufacturer has those results when the rounds are actually used as they're intended, or even tested under somewhat realistic use, like a pig corpse wearing clothes.

That could be a decent round or better, or worse - but I never listen to a manufacturer tell me about their product if I want an honest appraisal. Same for any industry.
