Deep breath here.. I moved to Mn. from Asheville NC. The genteeel ways of the South are not lost on me, believe me. Ah a mule drawn wagon for quail, yes my good sir that is a traditional that many unfortunately will never understand. I am not a fan of Orvis, something about a well worn duct taped pair of Filson britches that says no need for the Orvis crowd to apply. And I have a feeling you know exactly what I mean... Unfortunately a Duke University head hunter did not call me when my father died of cancer. This place in the North did however and my youngest son is now fighting cancer. I am not smart enough to cure cancer but figure i can help support those that can. You make my heart hurt for the South once again. I have been stationed all over CONUS and even Hawaii, but until now I have spent a large part of my life in the South when in CONUS. And miss it dearly, the people most of all. But I followed my goals to help work on the battle on cancer, actually it is a war, never dreamed it would be my son that was next.

I ended up at the number one medically ranked medical hospital in North America. Been here almost 15 years now. My son was only given a 40% chance of survival but his cancer is in remission now, in large part because of where I work, sometime ideology actually pays off. .. He still has to go through the next year with PET scans every 3 months. At the tender age of 15 he was the Mn. Sate class trap runner up with a score of 193x200. Have several B. Rizzini's because of him, it is his tool of choice. We do like our spaghetti (Italian guns) LOL.

I believe I would rather hunt with you than any Orvis crowd. Bob Shultz in Hendersonville, NC is an excellent source of target shotguns BTW. I would really like to get with you for a hunt. Likewise you are welcome to hunt with me for ruff grouse in Mn. After all I shot the last ruff in the Southern Appalachians more than 20 years ago ;) The rest of my PTO is spent in SD hunting pheasant with several other retired military gentleman. That is a tough nut to crack if your not retired military. But I know plenty of people that hunt the Golden Triangle if your interested.

I also use an 870 express tac. If I'm not using my Grampas old Winchester Model 50. Two different styles to keep the day interesting.

I have two children in the house, we live in a decent size rambler. My concern was the defense angles when it came to using my shotgun, too much over penetration with anything that's lethal, buck etc. Unfortunately my bedroom is the furthest down the hall which means in a really bad situation I'm defending back towards kids bedrooms.

So we settled on a couple of 9mm loaded with good JHP. 9mm because they're cheap to practice with and my wife handles them a lot better than a 40 or 45. She's a scary good shot with the 9mm's... We have a Rem 870 pump but it's not our go-to. We also each have some really nice LED flashlights/pulse that are small and we practice shooting with them..

I've got an 870 with a speedfeed 'coach' style grip, 18.5" threaded bbl, flashlight on the side, and extended tube. That's mine. Wife has a S&W 629 with a red dot on it...she's a better shot. I keep a H&R Pardner HD sitting on go, also.

Ultimately the best weapon is the grey matter right between the ears. If that's not working properly, doesn't really matter what's in your hands.

The shotgun being the best part.

In order for a shotgun, 12 gauge, to be lethal you need to have it loaded with buck of some sort. You mention the drawback to a rifle being over penetration... you should look at overpen statistics for a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with buck. To keep it short, nobody in a typical home is safe if a target is missed, something like 7+ interior walls and 1 exterior wall. Also, shotguns are not as maneuverable as a pistol and are noisy which can give away your position.

For most 3 bedroom rambler setups the master bedroom is the last room down the hall or on the opposite side of the house. That means your defensive position will usually have the other bedrooms in front of you or behind your target.

Shotguns are also harder to keep loaded and locked up for quick access, the safes are more expensive and typically not as quick to gain access to.

Spread is also a huge myth in the shotgun world... 2 1/2" at 12' is typical. 3-4" at 18'. You still have to aim.

If it won't go through a little drywall, it's not likely to go through enough bad guy.

I picked single shot because a percussion cap black powder rifle wasn't listed.

Really though, they are just all tools that fit different scenarios. If you are a bad guy who needs shooting in my house and I'm awake, you'll probably see a 5 shot revolver as that's what's likely on my person.

If I'm in my bedroom, I'm not likely to come looking for you. I'm just going to be behind the bed with a Mossberg 500 on the door and the wife calling 911. You won't hear a rack of the slide until after the first shot.

If stuff gets out of hand beyond that, I guess I have a M1 carbine that could be employed.

ARs can be a great platform, but I end up with other guns that I like better... revolvers, hunting rifles, etc I figure the pocket gun and shotgun will be enough.

Would love to read of a criminal getting smoked with a percussion cap anything.

Match or flintlock even more so.

Blunderbuss with some ball bearings and chain?

PLEASE AMERICA, MAKE THIS A THING.
