    Thread necro indeed.

I have Oak interior, so I went with tan homelink. If you have grey....I would definitely do grey.

ok, cool. it's hard to tell those colors apart in online photos, so i thought i'd ask. grey is what i was thinking would be a match.

Just followed this writeup to install a homelink module in my truck. Looks factory! Have to wait til tonight to program it though since my roommate has the only garage remote.

    Very pleased with the results!

EDIT: Just got it programmed! Works like a dream. Great mod.

I found the same thing. Great mod by the way, thanks for posting. I picked up one of the $20 gray Homelinks from FleaBay. I ran power from my passenger side kick panel and up the side pillar to roof. I also ended up using a couple wood blocks and some thick 3M foam tape to secure the assembly to the cab roof. There is quite a bit of wiggle room up under that roof liner and the transmitter needs a firm backstop for the buttons to work right and not rattle on rough roads. Some pics attached. The gray bezel matches up nicely.

I have an early tacoma that has a vinyl headliner, not the composite like yours, so won’t work for me, I’ve see this swap before. I do have the Gentex mirror but not with the homelink. Might have to go that route, yours looks great!!!

Quick question how do you get the gray bezel off of the unit do I just pry it apart?

Sorry bud, I actually don’t remember. I did that 7 years ago. That’s a whole lot of liquor and beer that’s been consumed since then.

I used a screwdriver to pry apart carefully. On each end is a nylon stud that is kind of diamond shaped in the middle to anchor the bezel to the transmitter. It is meant to pry off/push on.

One other thing worth mentioning: I did have to trim the backside of my headliner as another poster mentioned. The tolerance between bezel and transmitter is pretty narrow. I did the trimming from below with an exacto knife held at an angle. The bezel snapped on nice and tight after that.

Sorry for the thread necro but wanting to do this mod this coming weekend. So for power you all just spliced the map light wire then ran it back to the homelink unit? My homelink came with two wires already on it, did you just connect them? Sorry, my knowledge of even basic wiring is pretty much no existent.

one wire is the power, the other is the ground. Red is usually power, black is ground.

I took a different approach to this idea. I installed a Gentex 313 rear view mirror out of a 2012 Nissan Titan to have Homelink, autodim, ambient temperature, and a compass.

Ok so splice should go to the red wire on the homelink and then run a bit of wire from the black wire on the homelink to a grounding point (think the OP used a screw)?

Yeah you can use any screw that’s grounded to the cab.

But the OP said that getting power from the map light didn't allow him to use the homelink when his truck was off. Seeing if anyone grabbed power else where.

That could be a good thing. A thief can’t break your window and open your garage if the power is ignition switched.
