I’m looking to put a scooped hood on my 2008 2.7L Tacoma. When I look for hoods years go from 05-11, and 12-15. What’s the difference in hoods? Wouldn’t they both fit? I’ve heard of some people talking about one has an actual functioning scoop, while one is just for cosmetic looks.

I don't think there is a difference as looks, there might be a different mounts.

Non of the Toyota scoops are functional as far as needing to pull more air into the system stock

As stated, neither are functional. Aesthetically the later years (12-15) the scoops are wider. Also as the 12-15s have an “updated” grille/bumper/headlights, the hoods are different. They will fit, but the lines won’t match

Do they not work at all? Like am I able to take the molding out? Or is there no hole at all leading down to the engine bay?

They are just pretty boy wanna-be fixtures. Even if you hacked it open it's not going to feed the engine.

You do know you already have a ambient air intake in the fender, correct? It's not using underhood air.

And yes, you need an '05-11 hood to fit / look correct.

you can take the trim/molding out. It is open, but not completely/wide open. There is some bracing for the bottom sheet metal layer in the way. Regardless, the opening doesn’t line up with the air intake, so no benefit there.
As far as extra cooling… I’m not sure, but I doubt it. I feel like the radiator is up front getting plenty of air flow.

Ok I get it, they don’t technically work. Does anyone make a different molding so I can open it up? If it’s just a cosmetic thing, I might as well make it look cooler. That way when the ladies get close they don’t question how the air goes in

I’m not aware of any personally. Maybe someone does and will chime in. I guess you could always cut one yourself. The trim/molding pieces are sold separately from hood and they are available…

That area is low pressure so with it open air will not flow into it while driving.

That being said I removed insert and can see lots of heat escaping sitting still. The supercharger gets hot.

A supercharger sounds badass. I would totally consider one, or even a turbo but I don’t wanna wreck my truck just yet. It’s only got 68,000 on it. Maybe one day if I ever upgrade.

05-11 and 12-15 have different front ends (Gen 2 vs Gen 2.5). They did a facelift for 2012. Get the hood that matches your year range or your headlights and grill won't line up correctly

The time for boost is when it's young and healthy, not old and tired

    But

Know the up front cost (it ain't cheap)

Know the operating cost; mpg hit, premium full, service intervals

Know the realistic increase in HP on a 2.7. (it still won't be a rocket)

Can always go aftermarket with fiberglass or carbon fiber hoods with all kinds of scoops and louvers.

People have opened them and tied them into the air box. IDK how much of a difference that it makes without tuning it for more air, but it's definitely possible. However from everything that I recall, the flat hood of the Tacoma leads to neutral/negative air pressure, so even having a functional hood scooped piped to the air box may not actually do anything.

In terms of heat dissipation, again because of the mentioned negative air pressure, opening it probably wouldn't do much. Even if it did, it's rare that the Tacoma ever gets past the normal operating temp unless you're driving through Death Valley while towing a Mardi Gras Float
