Proclip is by far the best solution imo. Solid mount, easy 1 hand operation.

How'd you get the ball mount mounted? I've used 3M tape (a couple of different types) but they all keep falling off...

clean the plastic with rubbing alcohol really thoroughly before using 3M double-stick tape.

since I already have an aftermarket stereo bezel on my gen2, I'm thinking of hard mounting a RAM ball on it above the stereo, or maybe below the pocket below the stereo and above the passenger airbag nonsense.

RAM stuff isn't cheap at all, so I'm not surprised it's that much. For my ram setup right now, it cost me about that much.

It'll work .. that is what i was using on my 2010 with Ram mounts for both Cell and Tablet use.

I only moved it over to where i showed my new position, because i'm getting a larger screen head unit than the usual 7"

A ball in the middle-bottom of the screen wouldn't do.

If you have a gen two, look no further. I've been on a quest for mounts and spent a small fortune. This is the one! Cry once!

Now I just need to dig into the upper console thing above the mirror, and find the ignition-switched power to the display board, tap it, and squeeze in a USB 5V supply to run my dashcam thats stuck to the windshield behind the mirror... cut way down on wires that annoy me.
