How do you guys think all the recalls will affect Toyota financially? I think the general public will be cautious of the safety of Toyota vehicles for a while.

Toyota Financially will be hurt BAD both by the halt of sale and image damage. I work for a Japanese company and we are in the medical field on thing we try to do is have many different vendors so if a vendor specific recall happens it is isolated to one product. The good/bad news is that ford used the same vendor for some off its commercial autos. This will spread the hurt lol. Toyota will recover from this just as KIA is trying to do now.

The public is so fickle on these things. Two months from now when the public is all wrapped up in a Miley Cyrus sex tape or whatever else is going on, if you mention it people will wrinkle their brow, pause, and then go "Oh yeah...I remember that"

It'll blow over quickly after they are done performing the recall work. Will there be a fallout? Certainly. I don't think its going to be as dire as people are thinking it will be. Other auto manufacturers have effed up before too and they go forward just fine.

Remember the Ford trucks that would catch fire when parked?
    The Firestone tire delamination?
GMs engine fire recall from just this past year?
Chrysler's brake recall from just a few weeks ago? (Faulty clips)

    Oh yeah...I remember that!

I agree with smanz...they're just one or two celebrity fiascos away from people forgetting what happened.

I mentioned on another thread that Ford's record year of sales on the Explorer was 2000. The same year as the media blitz coverage of the Firestone rollovers. There is no such thing as bad publicity. Toyota will be fine in the long run. JMO.

I know current and previous Toyota owners are now looking elsewhere for their next vehicle. So I'm sure it will hurt Toyota quite a bit.

But wait, there's a Miley Cyrus sex tape?

Damn lawyers will be the only ones making out in the long run on this, already saw one web site all about Toyota's and how they can help you get compensated for your pain and suffering.

Toyota took the same path as American auto manufacturers and took the lowest bid to build something for their vehicles.
Born in the factories of Toyota Motor Corp. and adopted by nearly all manufacturers around the world, "lean manufacturing" eliminates waste, creates efficiencies and helps companies continuously shave production costs.
Toyota's recent problems highlight how certain elements of this approach—eliminating overlap by using common parts and designs across multiple product lines, and reducing the number of suppliers to procure parts in greater scale—can backfire when quality-control issues arise.

Just some of my thoughts- As well as those on Wall Street. Ken

Do you remember the recall for complete exhaust system replacement on all Toyota's with a 20R motor for cracking exhaust manifolds in the 80's.
Do you remember the recall for the first generation Camry for brake pulsation new front hub's, bearing's, rotor's, brake pad's, steering shaft, rear drum's, rear wheel cylinder's, and brake shoe's.
Do you remember the recall for the second generation 4runner's in the 90's for head gasket failure new block's head's.

There has been many in the past and Toyota has pulled through a little stronger than before I see the same here.

Probably because they will still be able to re-sell a lot of them for as much as the new vehicles they are selling.

So, is it the design specs sent by Toyota or the materials used by CTS thats the reason for the defective design. Many Toyota fans seem to think it's a software issue. I dunno?

IMO there might be a few concerns Toyota is addressing with this recall there are issues with the design of the pedal made by CTS that is a fact I have felt a few.

"Toyota Now Says Problem is 'friction lever'
"The defect involves how a part, called the friction lever, interacts with the sliding surface of the pedal inside the pedal sensor assembly, Toyota said in the letter to NHTSA."

"In this condition, if condensation occurs on the surface, as may occur from heater operation (without A/C) when the pedal assembly is cold, the friction when the accelerator pedal is operated may increase, which may result in the accelerator pedal becoming harder to depress, slower to return, or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position."

    http://mesopotamiawest.blogspot.com/2010/01/toyota-now-says-problem-is-friction.html

With any repair Toyota does it will include a ECM re flash probably to include some new safety fail safe programs to be installed.
In the end Toyota will step up and make it right that's what they have done in the past and that's what they will do here.

The recall and halted production is expected to cost Toyota Corp. approximately 400 MILLION per WEEK. (155 million per week lost revenue in sales plus a cost of 900 million to perform the recall, which they specify will be complete in 4 weeks) Do the math...

Rumors indicate they have already approached the G'ovt for financial help.
