as others have summarized. road conditions and your right foot determine how well mpg works.

keep your drive-line lubed correctly, fluids changed accordingly, replace worn out items.

Hey, I totally get trying to improve mpg. I get bored on my daily commute so tracking my mpg makes it more interesting. Anyway, I've got basically what should be the most fuel efficient 6 lug Tacoma. It's an 02 reg cab 2.7 prerunner with ~315k miles. I put new general heavy duty leafs on this year which raised the back end 2 inches so I put some old cheap Craigslist fabtech fox 2.0 adjustable coilovers in front that I rebuilt. I also just did the upper & lower ball joints & tie rods. Also I did valve cover gasket, wires & coils last year to pass inspection (cat conv code).

Anyway, I got a scangauge set up showing current trip mpg, daily mpg, tank mpg & miles to empty. I've also got 265/75r16 street tires overinflated. The ride is hard but I like it. Anyway my mpg is really good I think. (Used to get 17 no matter what speed)

I average about 24 mpg mixed driving half city half highway. Mostly I just don't drive aggressively. Even hypermiling when I can.

So on the highway around 55 when traffic allows I get around 30 mpg. At 60-65 I can get around 26-27. At 70 it's closer to 23. At 80 it's 18. In the city timing lights and coasting as much as I can gets me 20-22.

So anyway for me it's not about saving money or the earth (although both are great) but it's knowing my truck can run at optimum efficiency when I want it to (plus it's something to do).

I refill the tank when odo hits 400-420 miles & it takes usually 16-17 gallons.

Ack- also this is without any AC. AC kills my mpg. So it's windows down all the way. On the highway above 55 I'll sometime run the AC and it shaves a couple mpg off.

I thought Reg cabs only had the 15.1 gallon tank? I know Ext/DC has the 18+.

If you don't already have a vacuum gauge installed. That would give you another tool/gimmick to help to monitor driving style.

that's awesome, I had thought the less front-to-back would have made the tank smaller. but apparently it's top-to-bottom so it's smaller on the 2wd. learn something new every day. :)

Any idea if the gas tanks are interchangeable? Would love an extra 3 gallons in my '00 TRD.

I've averaged over 27mpg over 250 miles between DFW and Houston. It's all about paying attention to what you're doing. Draft as much as you can, coast instead of braking, watch at least 2 cars ahead of you and anticipate slow downs.

Remember, the more you brake, the more you'll have to accellerate, and braking LITERALLY converts your kinetic energy (that costs fuel to increase / maintain) into heat. Braking is your worst enemy, as is high speed drag from wind resistance, and rotating mass.

Other that that, basic maintenance to ensure a free breathing engine and rotating powertrain is about all you can do.

I don't understand why you wouldn't already have it. I do. It says all 6 lugs do. I'd like to have about 25 so I could go 400 miles to a tank also. As is, I fill up at 250

We get 20-22 in our 2000 2.7L. Cleaning the intake thoroughly, throttle body, and IAC valve helped alot. As well as replacing the PCV.

True, but the numbers don't make sense to me — my gas light goes on at about 13 gallons, which would be kinda crazy to have 5 and change in reserve. If I really stretch it I can get about 260 mi range with 14 gallons on a refuel which points to a 15 gal tank. I've never ever put more than 14 and change in the tank. Reading this thread, people seem to be either mid 200 miles on a refuel or mid 300s: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-many-miles-per-tank.241553/

So I wonder if some 6 lugs actually have the smaller tank, or maybe my fuel pump/sending unit was replaced with a 15gal version that tells me I'm low on gas way too early?
