Ther way Jeep cannot compete with Toyota/Tacoma is in resell value! I just traded my 2010 Base DCSB for a 2016 TRD Off Road DCSB. I bought my 2010 in 2012 for $27K drove it 3 years and almost 80K miles and the dealer gave me $24K for it!!!!

Last time I checked, Wrangler was #2 in resale value behind the Tacoma by less than 2% after 60 months (according to KBB).

    Lol a 2nd gen taco hangs with a Jeep but a 3rd gen doesn't?

Neither of them do but are you really implying the 2nd gen is more capable off-road than the 3rd gen? Despite it being an inch lower and having an identical suspension/wheelbase?

Link please and does KBB cover just US sales or across the globe. There's a major difference there.

I dunno, I guess if you're offroad-only focused the Jeeps may have some advantages over Tacos. Before I bought my 2013 DCSBOR I test drove a nicely outfitted Jeep just to satisfy some curiosity since I've never actually driven one before and it just didn't feel right. The interior was cramped, very little room in the back for my German Shepherd nevermind any kind of cargo/camping stuff. Thumbs down for my usage.

When I was younger my uncle had an 84 and then an 89 Toyota pickup (the 89 he just retired in 2012 with around 750,000 km on it). The body was rusted to shit and practically falling off but that engine still fired up and ran like a dream. I don't think any Jeep will last that long or be nearly as reliable. I test drove a bunch of different used Tacos from 2008-2015 and it just felt like coming home. For the kind of forest service roads that I use and the flexibility to hop in the Taco and drive halfway across the continent in comfort, I'm not sure any Jeep can do both of those things as well as the Taco can.

Which vehicle is "best" off road is not the most obvious. Off road situations vary like the weather. A vehicle with the right set of tires with floatation can make all the difference in the world in mud and be just as poor vs a narrow deep tread in snow making that vehicle simply awful.

My neighbor's son had a wrangler rubicon and I had this old Suzuki Side Kick; he had locking diffs and all the goodies and excellent tires. The Side Kick just had low range 4 wd but was so light with a short lift and basic 235-75-15, tires, I ran circles around him in mud and could go places he could not fit. You would be surprised how much people use to value these little buggers off road.

I would also put an old pre Tacoma standard cab short WB toyota truck as light as I couLd get it and for the same reason, against a jeep. So it all depends. New Tacomas can be too freak'n long at times to do off roading little justice on skidder trails. You just can't make the corners and end up beating the shit out of your truck. The shorter and lighter the better regardless of what it is called.

Haha. Suzukis are definitely underrated. Your story reminds me of a time I was doing donuts in a shallow stream with a solid rock bottom in my 2001 TJ (very red neck moment, I know). I managed to lose sight of where I was going because of the rooster tail of water and ended up in a "swimming hole," submerging my entire front end up to the rear view mirror. As my buddy and I sat shoulder deep in water, waiting to be towed out, a fully built up, rock crawler Suzuki Samuri painted bright yellow with a lime green roll bar came putting by us in the water. Very embarrassing, but all we could do it laugh.
