My horn only works when I mess with it by pressing on it for awhile and would like to clean it or replace it so it works all the time . Can I just pull on it and it pops off like the horn covers on my work truck ? Or do I have to do a bunch of procedures to get to it because of the airbag ? Kinda a safety issue

Yes, Toyota has a procedure for the cover to unlock so that the airbag doesn't inadvertently discharge.

    1) Key to ON
    2) Press brake pedal for 10 seconds, release
    3) Press cover to activate horn
    4) Hold for 30 seconds then release
    5) Repeat step 2
    6) Press cover for 5 seconds, release for 5 seconds
    7) Repeat step 6 for 8 times
    8) Key to ACC and it will unlock

    Yes, he is kidding you.

Follow th link above for replacing the spiral cable to get the cover off the center of the steering wheel as I'm guessing that is what you are asking about. Your issue is probably the spiral cable as the horn circuit goes through it.

I did all that but didn't find anything wrong but cleaned all the contacts after putting it back together my horn only works now if I turning the steering wheel more than half left or right. What can cause that ? Horn wont work if steering wheel is straight is their any thing to do to take out the air bag and look to see if it's making contact ?

The spiral cable has broken wire(s). It needs to be replaced.

Are you talking about a bad clockspring?

Yes, but it is not a spring. It is a cable that transmits electrical currents for things such as the horn, steering wheel stereo controls and the factory cruise control... etc. You have at least one broken wire that the ends only make contact with each other in a certain position.

Replace the spiral cable and you will be whole again.

Yeah, that’s called a clockspring. Used interchangeably with spiral cable.

Are you sure that would solve the problem of my horn not working ? It is a expensive part 238.00 online and non refundable . Could it be in the horn cover with the air bag is bent and not making contact or something ?

It’s usually the clockspring. It’s a common part that fails on a lot of different cars. Look online and there’s ways to diagnose if it’s the problem or not.

THANKS I was just looking at it online my controls all work on the steering wheel and my cruise control works .My horn only works sometimes when I turn the wheel right to left and jiggle the horn button a.k.a horn cover sometimes works and my air bag light is not on. Must be it then I hope.

Like was stated, it could be any of the wires that go bad first......like now on mine, I have to twitch the wheel to set cc but my horn works just fine and no airbag light. I have the clockspring sittin around waiting for me to get tired of it enough to swap it out..............There are cheaper ones but cannot speak to their longevity. I actually have a recall to replace mine but I refuse to let dealership chimps touch my truck, not worth time and trouble and whatever other problems they cause trying to fix the initial problem, been there done that but no more.............
