I just bought a 2004 tacoma 4X4 - I used to have a Nissan Frontier - obviously the way to get the truck into 4 wheel drive is very different. Can anyone give me a brief description of how to get the truck into 4 wheel drive.
    Thanks.

In 04 there were two different 4wd systems.

On the 4cyl trucks there is a second stick next to your main gearshift. Pull straight back untill it stops for 4HI. For 4LO stop the truck, put the trans in Neutral. (Clutch in if a manual) push lever all the way to the right and then all the way forward for 4LO.

The v6 engine trucks have a button on the transfer case lever for 4HI. Press the button to engage 4HI and press again to dis-engage. 4LO should be the same regardless of engine size, Neutral, (clutch in) down, right, then up, but it might just be right, then up. I am not 100% sure on that.

That sounds a lot more complicatd than for my 5speed 2001.

I just push the button for 4H or move the 4x4 shifter all the way forward for 4L.

The owner's manual describes how and when to make your shifts and provides other general reccomendations as well.

The Automatics work the same way, and you might also find some instructions on the back of the sun-visor( I can`t remember for sure).
