The issue is that the vehicle dash doesn’t tell you what gear you are really in, only what you selected, false information. Just because you select S5, doesn’t mean the vehicle will be in 5th, the computer will decide what gear your in, not you.

If you use manual shift in any vehicle, whatever the highest gear you are in, is the max gear it will go into. So if you are in 5th, the trans will not go into 6th. However, if you go to a stop, the trans will automatically go into first and since you are in manual mode, it will not shift into second until you manually do it. I have never encountered an auto trans that had manual shift select that didn't operate in this way. They all do

Not true, my SLK350 will hold the gear I select if I use manual and my GX470 would hold a gear until it lug the engine. The Tacoma will shift quickly

Maybe you misunderstood me or I typed it in a misunderstanding way. I stated that will not shift up, the max gear you put it in will NOT be exceeded, however, it will downshift. Hows that. The point that I was trying to make is that if you put it in 4th gear because you are climbing a hill, it will not go to 5th.

I will have to give that a test in a couple of weeks when I can get on some level ground. In the mountains I don’t have enough room to test that.
I really don’t use “S” unless I am towing or off road, but mine is tuned

I'm confused still. Were you replying to someone else who stated differently? Because yes, the truck doesn't tell you what gear you are in, never has. S mode just displays the highest gear you have selected.

Hardly false news, just not programmed the way you think it should be.

DSG in my GTI was the same. It would hold the gear you were in except for slowing down to a stop, or exceeding 7k RPMS.

To me that displays should show what gear your in or maybe there should be two displays, one for selected and one for the gear it’s in.
I think that a sport mode should hold the gear you select unless there will be damage to the engine or transmission, not because the computer wants to down shift because it thinks it will be better, that’s what “D” is for. When I use sport mode, I want it to hold the gear I select, just a manual transmission would. I will shift as want and while I don’t use it.

I just wish the "top gear selector" was a true "manumatic". I want to put it in 4th in the mountains and be able to floor it without getting a kickdown.

That is how our old Hyundai operated and it was awesome in the hills. You use cruise because it would floor it up a hill, might lose 1-2 MPH but it wasn't shifting all day.

I agree that it would be nice, but, they have to design things for Mr. Stupid, and Mr Stupid will lug the engine way down low in rpm,
and that is the eventual destruction of your torque converter and other components. Lets face it the biggest problem with these trucks isn't the trans as much as it is the gearing and we all know that. My 2012 Rav4 with it's little 2.2L 4cyl, has tons of pep and get go and it has half the hp of the tacoma at 3/4 of the weight. It should feel sluggish. But it is peppy and when I look at the gearing it is running at about 2700 rpm at 80mph in top gear. Thats easily 500 rpm more than the taco at the same speed.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
The simple solution to this is to own both. A manual and an auto. But be warned! They will keep you up all night as they argue over who is "better" fuckin kids.

    What can you say.

    2013 AC V6 MT OR Spruce/Mica

You just confirmed my decision @ start of pandemic.
I wanted/needed an AC/MT/V6/OR [= 2nd/1st gen only options; no AC/OR/MT in USA] - took me a long time to find one, 8 months to find one worth buying.

I was SO CLOSE to throwing in the towel and buying a 3rd gen automagic - - - the day I went to test drive it, there was exactly what i wanted - 3hr in the opposite direction. I thought about it & I have never owned an automatic, I used to drive off/road for work - all the time - and my truck was an automagic, I detested this and wanted more control over the wheel spin..
After thinking for a second, I realized I would not be happy driving an auto and why would I spend 20K on something that does not make me happy to drive . . .

I went down to SC instead of VA and scored as perfect as you can get 2013 2nd gen in spruce mica with 55K on the clock for $20K; they priced it wrong b/c they didn't realize it was an OR - till i pointed it out - and now it is worth more than I paid for it ;) craziness these days!

One owner, it lived out in AZ, not a bit of rust, at the pre/purchase inspection, the mechanics were like 'this is SO CLEAN' - all the fluids had been changed/refreshed; it is in immaculate shape - I couldn't have asked for more if I had taken care of it

I, like you, feel more in control in the MT - it also makes the truck 'peppier' for lack of a better adjective; I can rev it/make it move how I want it to move - not some software BS . . . I think the auto would have made me crazy, especially how it is described in this thread.

My grandpa made it to 92 in his stick shift, kept it even after having both knees replaced - I gotta beat him ;)

I have a 2020 OR. No shifting problems stock but I still tuned it with VFtuner. It allows me to have gear lock in S mode and I can squeeze more performance out of the engine. Also changed my throttle response curve.

It didn't make much difference for me either. ECT on or off, all it did was affect when the upshifts happened but had little effect on hill climbing with downshifts. S5 on this weekend's trip was better behaved but then the hills were shallow.
