the trans is what it is in a four cyl tacoma. its a truck it will have long throws and be notchy and feel rubbery but if driven properly it will do just fine.

Yes, but engine braking properly is different than shifting from 5-4-3-2-1 at every stoplight. Which people who say they "downshift at stoplights" normally do (not everyone though).

lol really?? do ppl really go thru every gear when they downshift? kind pointless, imo, i just downshift to 3rd or 2nd, depending on speed, then brake when i get close to the light.

I've rode with people that go all the way down to 2nd, not missing a gear.

Gotta agree. Sheesh guys, let it go. So he made a typo, it's not something to start a war over.

Besides, i'm pretty sure the thread is about how much you enjoy or do not enjoy your manual transmission. Engine brAking may be on topic but flaming each other over it shows a little immaturity on anyone and everyone participating enough to keep it going past 2 posts. Move on

Anyways, i usually pull it out of gear and just coast in neutral to a stop light. So this is actually more taxing on the parts than just leaving it in gear and letting the engine do the work? Are there any parts being stressed while the engine is braking?

In the tacoma I might downshift 1 gear ,never 2-3 . Often i just coast to a red if i have the distance with a downshift , perhaps even tap the brake slightly , goal there is for the light to be green before I get to it. IMO 4-3-2-1 downshift engine braking = something breaking prematurely , 15000 shifts are done right maybe , but which 200 weren't. BRAKE PADS ARE CHEAP , clutches in comparison are not.

Parts stressed on engine braking , if you end up at 3000 rpm or less i cant see any noteworthy stress , if you downshift and end up at 3500 rpm or more , only part i can see stressed ... if it even is ... would be the clutch. and yes i know there is a 500 rpm gap i left , its just a "for example" and imo once again.

Do you understand how hard it is to read everything you type? ANGRRYYY!!! I would actually like to read what you're saying, but it's nearly impossible. I'm serious, I can barely read what you're writing.

I have a 2010 base 4x4 2.7 5 speed. Once I got a few miles on it, it goes fine. The 2.7's take a while to break in. I shift anywheres between 2-3k rpms and i get 23 mpg. I haul my 15' fiberglass boat on the weekends, and while I notice some power loss, I still get 20 mpg doing that!

I don't know what you're talking about with the luggy thing... Mine's a 2.4 with 3.58 gears and I can still chirp the tires in 2nd... 3rd sometimes if its raining and I'm going uphill. I love mine

    .

I engine brake quite a bit, and I occasionally downshift when I'm having fun on the back roads. But for the most part I just coast everywhere in neutral.

Cool thing about the 2.7 is you can rev on it and have fun, and still get over 20 mpg!! Funny.. I could never do that with a small block chevy!

I think I would have to seriously TRY to get less than 25 mpg's.

I say if you get the 4 cylinder make sure to do 3 things:

    1. Get the URD short shift kit, made a huge difference.

    2. Make the dealer promise that if your clutch squeaks for any reason
that they will fix it. Mine squeaks like a mother, and it will cost too much to fix the squeaking.

    3. Go with the AAL (add a leaf spring) with some new 5100's as it made the ride so much better it was unbelievable.

Other than that I love my truck and get routinely 25 MPG freeway. I really like the AAL because my wife and I built a house this year and blew out the old shocks hauling concrete. (Don't tell her I did it on purpose to get a lift kit and some new shocks)

    Hope this helps,

    Brent
