It is simple logic. You asked if the JBL system sounded better. Why would they make you spend extra money for a sound system if it sounds exactly the same as the non-JBL? I suggested aftermarket because you can get a much better sound from aftermarket. Anyone who has installed an aftermarket sound system can tell you the same. I have done so on all my previous vehicles until my Tacoma. You can actually get an aftermarket system cheaper than the "few dollars" you would spend on the JBL upgrade. Is that better?

Yes, look at it in depth. It's not just "a few dollars" for that extra sound. It's a hole burning in your pocket.

I went from my 2014' Taco JBL system to my 15' without the JBL and absolutely hate the sound in my 15'.
I would spend the extra $ and get the JBL option.

Do you need to know, or care?
I have the JBL, and the sound is better. Can you do better aftermarket, yes, but I think the JBL sounds pretty awesome, especially if you have sat radio. Night and day from FM radio. In my mind, I recommend it if you don't want to go through the hassle of having an aftermarket system installed.

If you are already opting for the premium tech package the upgrade to JBL was about $700 if I recall. I test drive one with the premium tech and no JBL and thought the sound was kind of flat. I ordered mine with the JBL without ever hearing it and I am very pleased. No comparison to the non JBL and well worth the $700.
