I own a 2006 2.7l Tacoma that is about 14 years 5 months old with the original exhaust living in the rust belt. How long are everyone's muffler lasting on the 2.7l?

WOW, a neighbor owns a 2005 Tacoma and replace his a few years ago, so I thought I was on borrowed time but you give me hope mine will last a few years longer. Just curious what state your Tacoma lives and did you wash your undercarriage a lot?

It was originally a Southern Virginia truck. No rust issues at all.

Mine's still going strong at 27 years/168,000 miles. The secret is California climate and no short trip driving that leaves condensation water inside the exhaust pipes and muffler.

Mufflers rust from the inside out due to condensation that doesn't burn off if not brought up to operating temp.

The biggest factor in how long a muffler lasts is number of short trips.

2008 2.7 130k just replaced - muffler was OK but flanges rusted off and tail pipe rusted out of muffler - both at weld points - actual pipe was solid.

Did you go OEM or after market?

Yes - I went OEM - most recommended on Tacoma World so that's the way I went.

If you replace your muffler/tail pipe with OEM at the bare minimum paint the welds where the tail pipe is welded the muffler and brackets that connect tail pipe to cat. I painted the whole thing with VHT and I'm very happy with it - time will tell. I over sprayed onto the rusty cat and it looks great.
