I figured out a way to add a switch for the 400W anytime mod, so it can run like stock till you need 400W while driving. Or you can always run it at 400W, and turn it back to default when you have a trailer's electric hooked up. Either way, I'm doing this on a manual transmission. There could be a few switch options, but I went this route because it used more commonly available switches and relays, and used a non illuminated switch because this mod technically works when the switch is off, and the stick dash switch gives a status indication.

A diagram would be better (I'll add one to a later update), but spelled out...use a SPST switch (2 terminal) on the Purple Speed Sensor wire, then use a SPDT relay (5 terminal), using the SPST switch's output Purple wire as the signal wire (terminal 85-downstream ground, and 86 upstream positive), upstream Blue In (from the white harness) goes to terminal 87a, and the Blue Out downstream wire that feeds the inverter goes to terminal 30. Tap the nearby accessory Yellow 12V wire and run it to terminal 87.

    How it works:
Purple speed sensor runs power when the 400W is to turn off. You can interrupt this signal with the on-off switch.

The Blue clutch sensor wire is set up stock to lose power when the 400W is to turn off, so when the relay sees that Purple doesn't have power, it connects the Yellow 12V (87) to the Blue out (30), thus keeping Blue energized and maintaining 400W.

If Purple has power (by a flick of your switch and you start driving), then the relay sees the power and connects Blue In (87a) to Blue Out (30), and the wiring and safety's run with the stock wiring configuration.

According to other's posts, the 400W/100W dash switch will illuminate to indicate that the 400W is engaged, so you'll know which mode you're in once you start driving or push in the clutch. If it jumps to 100W, just flick your added switch.

I'm going to do the install in the next few days and will update. It's possible that terminals 87 and 87a might need to be reversed, depending on the relay.

? what :tumbleweed: the 2 have nothing to do with each other.

There is nothing bad that can happen if it is only on 400W I'v have been running it that way for 4 years now. it will only USE 400W IF it needs it, so if you only have a draw of only150 watts that's all it will pull.
your not going to burn anything out by having it linked to 400W all the time when it is on.

sorry but thats a lot of work and a switch to install for 0% gain.
    Maybe i am missing something?:notsure:
Its a 30 min job or less to do this mod, someone said it took them under 10 min to do?
save your time for all the other mods you may add.

really, I'm not trying to be a dick about it, just simplifying things up.

I like your thinking better, but I'm still hesitant.

I'm no electrician, and some people in these threads asked the unanswered question if a switch could be installed. I think I figured out how, so I thought I'd share (and give people a chance to tell me if I'm wrong too). I would think there's got to be some real reason the safety is in place. Best reason I saw was the extra loads from electric hookups when trailering. I figure the safety is in place for only a few rare circumstances that many people wouldn't experience, hence the general success with this mod. So to be safe, this could give the option to run it stock, but still have the benefit to run 400W if you know you don't have a lot of other heavy electric loads running.

But really, do we have a credible Tacoma insider or sparky that can credibly and definitively explain why Toyota would bother with the extra expense to install this safety in the first place?

Is there a way to have this drain an accessories battery? I don't want to add a separate inverter

Yea, ended up going with the 400W anytime. The lower power wasn't enough power for my electronics.

    Nothing yet....im a poor bastard.
This will sound dumb, but what am i doing wrong? I cant get the outlet to come on in ACC only at all. Whats the trick? I even read the damn manual.
Was going to do this mod, and I dont need it at the moment. But now it may become adding an outlet in the cab instead. Just for fun.

I don't want to move the outlet but only to get the outlet in the bed to stay on while I'm driving.

I cut the purple speed sensor wire this morning and took it for a drive, no change? The 400W and 100W come on when I am idle, in Park. The 100W will stay on for a few seconds if I turn it on when I am in gear, but turns off nearly immediately when I start moving?

Is there a way to get the outlet in the bed to work when driving rather than adding a new outlet in the cab?

Question for those who have done this mod. If you happen to plug in too much current draw, where is the fuse that (hopefully) will pop? Is it one of the fuses under the driver side dash? Or is it one of the fuses under the hood? Or is there a fuse in/on the inverter itself?

Still a very useful thread tutorial & thread. I didn't need an AC outlet in the cab, but damn it's annoying when the bed outlet kills your fridge power in the middle of a drive.

My only challenge was that the extra wire I had laying around was either 6 gauge or 22 to ground with. Doubled up the 22 since I wasn't sure if that's what the stock wiring was, or if it was a little thicker.

    Sorry if discussed...

Has it been confirmed as to what wires to tap for 110V in the cab for a manual transmission?

I saw two posts with some conflicting info and wanted to verify.
