The charger has a positive and negative but no ground. Should I be doing something more? The video is what happens when the charger is hooked up. When it is hooked up there is a faint electrical burning smell so connection wise I assume I have a decent connection as far as that goes

Why would you wire a 12vdc charger to a 120vac outlet?

this. pretty sure that is for dc and thats why there is no ground. dc is only positive and negative. the inverter makes the power from 12vdc to 120vac so you are pumping 120vac into something meant for only 12vdc which is probly overloading that socket which is the burning smell.

uh, what did you connect that extra 12VDC lighter socket too??
It definitely should not be connected to the output of the Toyota inverter.

It should only be connected to a 12VDC source. I gather the thingy you are putting into the auxiliary lighter socket is the USB adapter?

Burning electrical smells are never good. If in doubt, disconnect what you have done, before you burn your truck up in flames.

I was trying to get something I thought looked cleaner than the regular wall socket but I guess I'll just have to go get one. I'm putting it in the storage compartment behind the drivers rear seat anyways so I won't have to look at it. Thanks guys. I'll let you know if a different socket fixes my problem. If I wanted to wait, this would work since it has a ground right? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=361167266164

12 volt wiring has a + and a - the - IS the ground there is no need to have two. If you have it connected to the inverter output it will smoke any thing you plug into it. The ebay one you listed is a 12 volt device it does not get connected to the inverter output unless you like the smell of burning electrical parts.

The device shown has two USB ports, one of which provides a charge when connected to 12VDC (red and black wires), the other is used to provide an input to car audio system. It will not provide a charging output unless it is connected to an audio system that does.

the Regular wall socket folks are adding to the inside of their truck is used to provide 120Volts AC, (like in your house) and that is the only type of socket that is connected to the inverter output. Do not connect the USB socket you described to the inverter output leads.

Thanks for the answers earlier. I don't know much about wiring, AC or DC which is why I made that stupid mistake which was obvious to everyone else apparently. This is what I ended up doing. I hadn't seen this on this thread so I'm posting it. It is a little more work but i can't deal with looking at non factory looking mods. I only have one kid so it isn't a big deal to fold the seat down to plug her iPad in. If i had 2 kids I may not do it this way

I finally did this yesterday. I spent 10+ hours on this project. 1. I go slow. Real slow. 2. Ran into a hiccup doing the 400 watt anytime mod. I grounded the wrong violet wire and ended up shorting out the starter fuse which caused the truck not to turn over. A internet search led me back to this site where I found a solution to my mistake.

When doing the 400 watt anytime mod make sure you *ground the connector side violet wire to a ground* not the wire leading back to wiring harness.

I used a Leviton brand USB/AC outlet. The USB gives 3.6 amps and the AC is 15 amps. 3.6 is more than enough amps to quickly charge just about any USB connected device.

I found mine at Home Depot but here's a link for one online.

You're not going to get the full 15 amps or 3.6 amps from it tho just to let you know. Max you'll get is 3.33

USB output is 5VDC@3.6Amps available. He'll be able to charge two iPads, or a tablet and a smart phone at the same time.
