Those plugs are sweet. That's what I was looking for at first, but radio shack didn't have them. I'll post that in the first post for an option. In sure ppl will be interested in a plug like that.

    Good write up
I wonder if the 400 watts would be able to charge a laptop while it's running? (Good time killer if you take long trips with kids)

It sure gets easier to say "f it" after it's paid for and has a few dents!

Great Mod! Might make it a little more "to code" for couple more bucks. Never really found a good use for the outside plug. Kinda forgot about it till this thread!

I plan to use it for phone charging (back passengers) I've charged my phone in the back a few times while doing mods or maintenance on my truck. That bed outlet is sweet. Most people that don't have tacomas always say that's sweet. I wish I had one.

Thanks for the writeup Adrian. There used to be a writeup detailing all the steps like you have here, but the OP took down all his posts when he left TW.

Here's another install example, (added here instead of starting yet another post on the same topic, hope that's all right Adrian)

rear view of outlets, quickconnects, heatshrink, solder and heatshrink to computer powersupply type jack.

finished side view. Holes were cut with a 7/8" holesaw, then filed sqaure. 5 minute job. Outlets snap into place. Left space for a possible DC outlet. I also installed a USB power outlets, not shown in this view.

Wiring at inverter. Note i used a computer power cord, so the console can be disconnected & removed with ease. Ground wire is connected to the obvious grounding point. I hate using crimp taps, but this seemed the best alternative, and used electrical tape to insulate it. I prefer the method Adrian did.

for Automatic transmission - Violet w/ white stripe wire is cut, and both ends heat shrunk. (This wire is pulled to ground when the truck is moving. Cutting it makes the inverter think the truck is always at a standstill.) There is one more step, and that is to cut the violet wire, add on a piece of wire to the inverter end of this cut violet wire, and connect it to ground. Do insulate the other cut end of the violet wire! This will allow 400W all the time. Inverter is still turned on/off with the dash switch, and requires key to be ON.

This may be a stupid question, but since you have wired it in before the inverted, how does that affect the power? I do not have the power inverter/bed plug, but I think I have the wires pre-installed. Should I just be able to tap into the existing wires to install plug? I'm only looking to charge phones like you.

You could preinstall the plug, but it will not provide 115Vac power. You need the inverter to convert DC battery power to AC output.

The stock Tacoma (TRD/SR5 option i think) has the inverter mounted under the center console.(ie its not actually mounted in the bed, only the outlet is ounted in the bed.) There are two connectors on the inverter; one of them brings in the heavy gauge DC wires, and the other connector has the AC output and control wires. The above descriptions tap into the AC output right at the inverter. Does that help?

I think?? I guess this means I would have to install an inverter if I wanted plugs to charge cell phones without cigarette lighter plugs?

Could source a stock inverter from an auto wrecker and install it.

Yeah. I thought about that. Guess I need to take my center console out and make sure my truck is pre-wired first.
