..... or Does the House Always Win ?

They seem to be holding all the cards. They have the training and team to back them up. I really feel disadvantaged and lacking when I go through the big glass doors....

How do I get the best price ?

Bring a gf or wife to pretend to hold the price strings. Make her play bad cop saying it's too expensive. That whole "appeal to a higher power" move they pull when talking to their boss...you can flip it around on them with this.

Talk directly to the sales manager as soon as you are ready to buy...don't use the salesman as the middle man.

End of month/end of quarter is the best time to shop.

Know what market value is in your area. These forums help, truecar helps, etc

You can try car buying services like usaa or Costco. At the very least they give you a starting point.

If you have a trade, don't mention it until near the end. Know what it's worth and what you'd be willing to take for it.

Know your budget. Don't let them play the payments game. I go in with cash or my own financing. You can always play the: if you come x more off the price I'll use you financing as a bargaining chip. They make money off that so they'd be willing to take a small hit on the vehicle they are selling.

Try to figure out their incentives and use them against them. Like I said above about financing. The same can apply with those warranties. "Come off the price by X and I'll get the warranty too". Then just return the warranty after a month for cash.

I just use True-Car to find out what invoice price is and try to haggle as close to invoice as possible. They will tell you that they can't sell for invoice because they don't make money, but that is a lie. If it's something on the lot than you should be able to buy at or even below invoice easily. If they have to get it from somewhere else, including the factory, then I am usually happy if I can buy within $500 of invoice pricing. Basically if I like the salesman I will allow up to $500 over invoice, if I don't than $200 over invoice. Be prepared to walk, but a good dealer knows these are good numbers.

first, you need to know what you want.

Tru-car and several other places on the internet will tell you what people generally pay for a specific model OR you can post here and ask us what we think of the price.

    now on to negotiations
The dealer wants you to feel like they are holding the cards.
When in fact YOU are holding all the cards - with the ability to walk away. Always keep that as an option.

When you are looking at a truck the dealer will pry, pry, pry, hint around, and pry some more to try and figure out how you are going to pay.

What you want to do is negotiate the price of the truck first

dont tell them something like "I need a payment under $xxx a month" There are all sorts of interest rate and extended loan term voodoo they can do to make the payment lower, but will screw you long term on the interest.

    1. negotiate price of truck first
    2. Then tell them how you would like to pay or mention a trade in if you are
    3. buy truck

I have bought two new Tacomas both from Graponne in Bow. They are decent to work with.

I don't know, I haggled with them when I bought both my trucks. The last one was in August of 2013 so I don't know if something has changed.

I bough my truck in Ira Manchester, NH and they were great. I have my formula for buying cars and they were the best price by far.

Just visited them.... Pretty good inventory.
Care to share your formula ? Your new truck sounds like what I'm after minus M/T.

Everybody has their opinion as to what a "good deal" is. My goal was to get out the door for the MSRP price(taxes included). Think I might have been about $150 over that when all was said and done, so I considered it a win.

Go in with your version of a good deal, and get it. If you are reasonable, it should be relatively easy.

7 weeks ago I purchased a new Tacoma following this process to a T and got what I believe is as good a deal as I could hope for (and avoiding all stress and sales pressure.) Ended up at about $500 below factory invoice + tax. Highly recommend following this method.

You will definitely get some of that, haha. I collaborated with maybe 30 dealers, ended up buying in Massachusetts.

Definitely stick to your guns online, they will all want to waste your time on the phone ... and/or try to lure you into the dealership. I wouldn't budge on that until they produced a good quote and a VIN of the exact Taco you desire.
