Well, I used a 1/2 ratchet and torqued them by hand. I stopped applying torque when I felt resistance by the plug. Note that I didn't apply to much force. Also, I changed the valve cover gasket including the gasket for the spark cylinders.

Without a torque wrench it's borderline irresponsible to tell someone how much to tighten the spark plugs. The head is aluminum and the correct plugs have an anti-seize plating on them, facts which make this particular torque value very important. If you don't have much experience with torque values and cannot use your wrist to approximate how much force is 12-15 ft lb, I highly recommend you rent a torque wrench for this procedure. Spark plugs are only changed every 100k, so do it right.

I'd recommend at least 6" extension, and have another 2" or assorted extensions available if needed.

You might want to change the size of the spark plug socket required. You use a 5/8" socket on a 3/8" drive...just for future reference.

Platinum/iridium plugs should not be gapped as the plating is thin and will be scrapped off. They come set to the correct gap.

OK, I agree with all said .... but I have a dumb question, How does the dealer do this when replacing the plugs? Do you need to wait for hours after you drop off the vehicle before they will start work on the engine??

Depends on the tech. Some wait, others do it when hot.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but a 9/16" socket did NOT work for me - it was too small for the stock plugs and the Denso SK20HR11 plugs I purchased to replace them with. The length was too short and it seemed like it was too small for the nut, but it was hard to measure since it couldn't make it to the nut. I used a 16 metric. Hopefully I'm able to contact the OP even though this is an old thread. I had my truck torn apart and luckily my landlord had a car I could borrow to drive to the autoparts store. I should have brought my new spark plugs when I went to buy the socket in the first place. Lesson learned. Still, this thread helped me to get the job done. Muchas gracias! Que tengo un buen dia.

Thanks for this direction.. I used Denso plugs on my 2006 Tacoma with 98K miles I was pleasantly surprised to find the old plugs (original) to be in very good condition. I noticed when removing each plug that the plugs had a screetching, dry feeling so I did use the anti-seize in putting the new ones in. I didn't want the dry plugs to alter my perception of torque. I used all hand tools and a 3/8 drive ratchet with a extension and a 5/8 spark plug socket. I seated the plug and then tightened just over 1/4 turn. It all went well..

Great write up, thanks. Just had mine changed increased my gas mileage 1.5 - 2 MPG. The plugs were a part of my 120K maintenance. Got 390 miles out of my tank for the first time since owning it. Have a 2011 2.7, 80% highway, going 75-80, 20% city.

TY for the write up and the information on the plugs. I am at 115K on my 09 and getting ready to do the 120K maintenance.

Question concerning the coils. I plan on treating these coils like any other coils and replace only when they go bad. Any advantage to replacing at 120K? I would doubt that there is any advantage.

Question about fluid replacement. Anyone have a preference for a fluid pump for the manual transmission and rear differential?
