I played around with this over the weekend. Thanks for all the info!

    Startup Screens

Jimi - This is a photo of one of my mixed media paintings ... the colors look really good on screen.

These are for when I'm in a game day kinda mood ... which isn't often these days due to our record, but that's for another thread.

Hard to see the colors and background in this light.

    Screen Off Image

This is a logo I made for my hiking team. Again, hard to see the details in this light.

Had great luck, took about 5 min. .JPG files from a Mac.

Was also pleasantly surprised that with the screen off (and new picture showing) I could still navigate the radio stations etc via the steering wheel controls.

For those that are having problems and following everything to the letter, I think I see another tip that nobody has mentioned. (yes I am computer geek) I see in Post #296 They mentioned they are using a 64GB USB drive and get an error message. FAT32 format has a (PARTITION) limitation of 32GB. It could be that the USB is not recognized due to the size over 32GB and or its not really formatted in FAT32 (because of the larger capacity) although it may say it is. Just my .02 fwiw

If someone did mention this then i apologize I only made it to page 16 then jumped to the end of the thread....hopefully this will help out someone who still cant this free and cool mod .

I dont have a 3rd gen (yet) and I cant confirm this, however, can one format the USB to exfat format? or even ntfs? will the head unit recognize it?

    Also for further clarification:

    FAT32:
partition limitation is 32GB, and file size limitation is 4GB.

NTFS is ideal for internal/hard drives/SSD
exFAT is ideal for flash drives/SD drives, and is generally more compatible with devices than FAT32
    FAT32 .... is so 1990

I dont believe the HU will support NTFS as someone noticed early in the thread that was their problem.

The 2016 Owners Manual specifies FAT32 on page 310 as follows:

"●Compatible device formats The following device format can be used:
    • USB communication format: USB2.0 HS (480 Mbps) and FS (12 Mbps)
    • File system format: FAT16/32 (Windows)"

For the same reasons exFAT is not supported I would presume although which i have not verified. I would just "stick" with a USB drive smaller than 32GB and make sure to use the FAT32 option to be safe.

This worked for me. I got an error on the first drive I tried, and it was a 64G. Tried with a 32G, no prob.
