I didn't see anything in that video I would describe as "abuse". That's generally how my homies and I wheel as well. Generally when I talked about "shock loading" it starts at bouncing hard enough to start to unload the tires. Bouncing a couple times on a ledge approach shouldn't cause any immediate catastrophic damage, but it's probably not good for the drive train. I'd think back on any other time you could have abused it. If you did anything foolish at any time before this though, it probably damaged it and was just waiting to fail. Way too many people beat the fuck out of their trucks without it immediately failing think that since it didn't fail instantly that its OK, then a week later have a break down, bitch and moan how things aren't stronger and completely disregard the stupid things they were doing the week before.

absolutely. Ironically this is only the second trip out with the diff tube which is not to say that something else didn’t lead to the cause. I usually drive like that (smooth and controlled) but who knows.

i just purchased another diff tube ($900 CND....) and will have the spare cv components so I don’t have to drive home with the diff spinning unlubricated.

Was a learning experience and considering I got off the trail and made it home, I’ll take that as a win.

Would a front diff tube from a 4th gen v8 4Runner work as well? Could pick up a used carrier assembly and I believe the v8 4runners already have 3.73 gears in them.

Pretty sure something in my ADD/tube assembly is ready to go, very very noisy like a bad bearing as soon as it goes into 4WD. Any guesses before I remove it to install the spare?

Could be a lot of things, there's a lot of parts on the shifter that could go bad or fail. The only bearing in the ADD spins all the time so if it was that I would imagine you'd hear it all the time instead of just 4wd. I didn't know anything was wrong with mine until it catastrophically blew out.

I cant wait until I take it all a part, I'll know for sure later today exactly where the noise is coming from once I put it up in the air. From inside the cab it sounds like from the ADD tube..

Noise happens instantaneously when turning the dial to 4H, even before the 4H indicator light turns solid.

That'd make me put ring and pinion at the top of the list.

ah, but here's the thing..the noise is constant, no high/low howl/rumble, clunks/thuds, just a steady grind

Then maybe tcase chain second. Remember, everything in the front is always spinning except ring and pinion and front drive shaft, it's just not all engaged left to right. A 4wd shift spins up the tcase chain and front drive shaft first, which spins up the ring and pinion to speed match at the ADD which then slides the shift collar to engage the passenger wheel to the diff.

I wish there was a posi lock option. A neat cable or lever activated by pass would be so boss.

Yup, and I'll be the first one to say that sound travels. What I think is the ADD/tube could very well be coming from the t-case. I'll have it up in the air soon as have my rack available with in the next hour or so

could be the clutch sleeve or clutch hub is worn as well. Never seen that occur before but stranger things have happened.

Had the truck up in the air while running in 4WD, noise IS coming from the ADD/tube. Noise is less when holding the passenger side wheel still and letting the driver side spin under it's own power. And found no stripper glitter in the diff oil. I'll swap in the spare on Friday and tear down the broken one to see what failed.

Just to verify, FJ donor with ADD will be a direct bolt on replacement?

that’s right. You’ll need some shorter bolts that secure the tube to the differential.
