There could be a lot of places on the shaft it could crack so look really close. After mine broke I inspected it a while later and had a couple extra cracks on the female receiver and another crack on somewhere on the shaft, all of those were hard to see without giving the shaft a close inspection.

After my ADD broke I swapped it with a FJ tube, after that I had a obvious intermittent hum that sounded like it was coming from the transfer case, turned out the locker was cracked too.

Yea, looks like he dropped it right on the ground.

@MonkeyProof Told ya it was ring and pinion! Well, I at least figured it was part of something that spins up on a shift to 4wd.

Nah, diff drops on 2nd Gens. don't really equate to anything substantial..

Diff drop wouldn't have prevented a pinion bearing failure.
My junk has been seen it's fair share of the occasional leisurely Sunday drives :p. And keep in mind this is nearly a 10 year old setup. It's even been through a busted front Currie Interprise 4340 chromoly extend halfshaft and broken outer birf. Imagine the pressures and force inside the front diff that day. I'm actually amazed my only issue is a bad bearing after all it's been through..

No no no! I’m not saying a diff drop could have prevented this, just the opposite, hence my question. Never mind dude

Is there a specific orientation the ADD stub needs to be in to remove it? Would a slide hammer work better than a pry bar?

Dual pry bars 180⁰ apart. Quick little shove it'll come right out.

Just to be clear on the parts I'll need as I plan on doing this and the fj case at the same time.

Manual fj stub shaft and axle tube as well as a few small items and then the auto fj transfer case?

depends if you are an auto or a manual. Might need to crack the case to swap input shafts. Probably need a welder, some 1/2” round bar for routing the shifter as well.

Is there any concern with the chain in the tcase spinning all the time without being in 4WD?

i have none. The AWD cases from the 4runners and FJ cruisers are about the exact same design so I can’t imagine there are any ill effects.

Right, but they are always under load because AWD, no 2wd.

I vaguely recall reading something about oil coming out the top because of this but again, just read it and it wasn’t my experience. Good to hear you have zero issues

true, the chain has less slop on the AWD cases I’d imagine. I did this write up almost 5 years ago and haven’t seen any downsides. The oil pump is driven by the input shaft so there’s still plenty of lubrication happening, I suppose something could be waiting to bite me in the ass years down the road but at that point I’d just refurbish the transfer case and still be ahead any costs of electronics or the frustration of the system not working.
