so I was in a deep situation this weekend. my truck got stuck in snow. I had tire chains on the back wheels. there was just too much snow and ice and the wheels start spinning and soon the back wheels were deep in the snow spinning. another truck with winch helped me get out but what else can I do if I am alone? this is the second time I have driven on snow.

I always used 200-300 lbs of bagged sand over the back axle, it won't slide around much plus you have traction material at hand to throw under the tires.

Either 1. Don't drive in snow so deep with only a 4X2

    Or 2 . ^^ as said, get a 4x4

How many tows does it take to reach $3K? And, that doesn't include your time or troubles.

Either pay for a 4x4 or get stuck in the snow.

4x4 can get stuck as well. I don't understand why I feel like I have to tell you that.

Stock as Stock can be with duratracs and a roof rack
Had you tried adding some grip under the tires ie rocks, sticks, gravel? Keep in mind there is a high chance of shooting these items out the back.

If you were that stuck, I'm guessing you probably got high-centered on the diff/axle. Even four wheel drive most likely wouldn't have helped you in that situation.

Yeah bud. Like others are saying, unfortunately you would need a 4X4 to get out of a situation like that. Sand only does so much so I wouldnt waste my time with that as well, yes it adds a touch of traction but not enough to warrant its use in situations like yours.

How about adding one of those harbor frieght winch in front of the truck. my friend that helped has a tacoma 1st gen 4X4 and also got stuck while helping me but he had a winch mounted in the front of the tuck. that helped him to pull himself out and then he helped me. I have had the truck for 6 years and never had a need for 4x4 until this weekend.

While you weigh the merits of a 4x4- as suggested carry a shovel and throw some traction sand in the back.

Try gently rocking the truck forward and backward to gain enough momentum to get free. Try not to spin the tires while you do it. If that doesn't work get your shovel and remove snow from in front of and behind all four tires. Put down some sand or gravel then do the rocking thing again. Rinse and repeat the shovel and rocking thing until you are either unstuck or decide you need pulled out. If you have a passenger or bystanders willing to help have them push the truck during the forward rocks.

So, if you aren't doing so already, carry a shovel and sand or gravel. Kitty litter from the nearest grocery store or mini mart will work in place of sand/gravel.

I can't believe it took 10 posts before someone said to shovel it out. A good shovel is the most effective snow recovery tool there is for the $$. And with your chains, you've got the second as well.

I used to do fine with my old Courier, add some firewood to the back and I'd be fine. Just stay out of deep mud, the springs will hang up or get high centered. I've had my '93 toy pulled out of snow on our private road once, neighbors pushing snow across the road and leaving more packed snow with every pass. Then they don't help you shovel out. My neighbors old Jeep got stuck where I'd been with my Courier once, in a neighbors driveway, I'd dropped off some firewood, but left a row in the back for traction. He just spun on ice.

I thought once I put on the chains that I would be fine but then I got a little stuck and I was able to rock back and forth. but then I pressed on a little gas and thats when it started digging a hole. and in few seconds it was high centered at the back.

The worst thing to do is slam on the gas. Especially after you lost momentum.
