The snow had become way to soft by the time I was stuck. I was able to move a couple feet only to sink back down immediately. I was turning around to get the hell outta there before it got to bad.
Good news was that insurance covered the tow. There is a paved road under there somewhere.
And I don't think I had enough elbow grease to dig myself out 4.5 miles down the hill to the snowline.

I ended up in the exact same scenario as you a couple weeks ago. Was heading onto a trail to play around when I realized I was making fresh tracks, and the snow was getting soft. So I stopped to turn around and head out... and sunk. No amount of digging would have gotten me out, there was nearly 100 inches of snow between the bottom of my truck and solid ground. As soon as I got myself out of one hole, I got stuck again. :anonymous:

Luckily we weren't too far from a DOT shed where they store the road clearing equipment and my wife was able to sweet talk one of the guys into pulling me out with a bulldozer.

Wow, lucky you. I hiked a very long was and then hitchhiked back to town.
I am thankful for one thing...my wife was not with me that day! If so, I may not have lived through it.

Snow is just like sand, mud, steep loose trails, heavy traffic, or high speeds. The more you drive in it the more comfortable and skilled you become. Just takes a little practice.

so I was just looking at some recovery straps. how much lbs capacity should I get? isnt the rule of thumb to get 3 times more than the weight of the vehicle. dbl cab tacoma weighs 4000 lbs so like around 12-15000 lbs capacity should work?

Nothing like experience. The real problem is snow on dirt roads with frost underneath. It's pretty much ice under snow and snow tires and/ or chains are the only thing that helps......on 4 wd. 2 wd, no matter what you do is limited in snow.

with all the drought issues in CA, we havent had good snow for last 4 years or so. so we dont get much chance to get out to the snow.

Towing a Snow Cat uphill with a 2wd even with chains will not work. Just kidding, but I do like my 4wd and no it will not tow a snow cat up or downhill.

The stock tires on many of our trucks were Rugged Trails. Rugged fails is a fitting name for them since their snow, ice, wet, and off-road performance is a failure.

These tires are a failure because of their pretense. I have an off road model which came with these essentially, all season tire and poor one at that. Most cars are tried out on the highway so the ideal OEM tire is one that looks off road but is quiet with less drag; essentially, a cheap all season tire. They are allergic to ice and snow. It you use them as a winter tire, you won't be happy.
