Any tips you can share with the removal of the overhead console? Bought a home link on eBay thanks to your idea. I pre programmed it prior to install to ensure it works. I will be installing it later in the week. Just don't want to break anything removing the console.

Its fairly easy, but obviously depends where your placing it.

All I needed to do was remove the center console on the roof panel. There is all of one screw that holds it on. If memory serves me correct, it was in one of the first compartment (where you can stowe sunglasses.

Once you remove that, there are two extremely difficult (because they are so tight) 'clips' that attach the end nearest the windshield to the roof. They are extremely strong (which is actually a good thing) to prevent rattleing I'm assuming. There is one on each end of the piece. I just loosened the screw on the other end, then worked my fingers down between the headliner and the console piece (make no mistake, the first time my fingers were definitely feeling the pinch) till I got near the end. I did this then on the other side as well, and then popped the end off at the same time. Careful of the tabs that hold it on....the first two times I pulled the console off, I thought I lost one of the clips. One ended up still being in the hole, another time, it flew off and I had to do a search for it.

If this doesnt help much, let me know and I'll go shoot a few photo's to ease confusion.

Nice writeup. I have a 2011 and I just put my garage door opener in the space provided in the overhead console(in the pic the one on the right). Push the front of the console and door opens. For those that don't have what I have your homelink mod is nice.

I know I'm bumping an old thread, but can anybody point out which 2 wires to tap in to for the homelink?

Harness on the right is what he's talking about I think. That's the harness for the overhead lights so it should just be a + and - wire I'd imagine. The home link can scavenge power from those since it's power requirements are minimal.

I think I might have to do this. I freaking hate having remotes.

My 2012 came with home link, auto dimming mirror, temp display, and backup camera. Toyota finally has them now.

I wonder if that mirror will work in the earlier trucks.

Just did this mod. Awesome, thanks for the write-up. Really easy and much better than having the clickers on my visor

Installed my homelink. The wiring is easy but fitting it is kinda a bitch. The gray trim part is tough to pop back on (or was in my case) while the unit is in the headliner.

My home link unit came with a black wire and a green wire. The black wire is - and the green is +. On the Tacoma wiring harness there are only two wires. One of them is white with black. That one is - and the other one is +. At least I think that's how it was. I installed mine and it works great. Totally worth the $30 I paid for it.

Tried this mod today. Unfortunately the homelink I bought used off ebay has really worn clips and it wont stay. It falls off very very easily. I'm contacting the seller to see if I can swap this out.

Until then I have a gaping hole in my headliner

I'm glad you guys like my install, but for those who are more handy with wires, there is another tutorial to install 3 buttons in the center of the roof console, and hide this one inside the headliner. way cleaner than mine. I'll try to find it.
