if anyone has a photo of which cooler lines are pulled (i don't even know where they are located... well in front i know that) that would be helpful so I can verify they have been tampered with

Post count aside, he's correct. Flushing does accomplish more than just moving crap around... The whole point of a flush is to get the 'crap' suspended in the fluid and flush it out of the system.

That being said, a drain and refill is much better than nothing and you know the job was completed. The filter in the tranmission should keep the amount of 'crap' floating around to a minimum.

You were right up until the end. The reason you don't change the tranmission fluid in a tranny that's damn near dead is because all the contaminants suspended in the fluid are what's making the torque convertor work. The gaps in the plates of a torque convertor are normally very small so clean fluid allows it to function as normal, in a worn out torque convertor, the added grit is actually what's making the transmission operational.

It's an internal filter, not a spin on like for the engine (although that would be really nice to have). It's not something you would need to change regularly. Even if you take the truck in for a transmission flush, it is very highly doubltful that they would change that filter. You'd have to pull the transmission pan to get to it.

I've heard a lot of conflicting stories as well. Is each vehicle mfgr different? Cause my dad has Honda/Acura vehicles and they will not flush at the dealership, drain and fill only. However it seems that Toyota is not the same? BTW my Nissan/Infiniti dealer doesn't recommend flushing for my G37 although they will do it if requested but still not recommended. Coming up on 30k in my Tacoma and just want to make sure I'm getting the proper preventative stuff done.

Personally, I just drained and refilled mine at 60k miles. Unless your truck is worked really hard, I think 30k miles is too soon. I figure if Toyota's going to make it easy and put drain/refill/check plugs, I'm going to do it myself. I'll probably never swap the filter unless I think something fubared (in which case the transmission would most likely be toast anyways). I'll do the drain/refill every 40 - 50k miles from here on in.

Its just a metal screen, not a filter. Dont say that because some paranoid freak is going to start 100 threads about changing a filter

Hey, one other question. Does the dealership NEED to remove the fluid check bolt even with their little fancy machines?

When I first read the title I thought it said "How to know your Tranny has flushed". I had visions of a transvestite on a toilet.

I've had transmissions flushed over the years and I've never had a problem with it stirring up crap and cause issues.

No, but yes. They know exact fluid measurements, and what not, BUT they should for eyeball verification purposes. You know, since hopefully these "high school drop out" techs are being thorough.

So where did I say it caused damage? Oh, I didn't. Weird. Experts say a lot of things. If they said sticking your dick in the tailpipe to flush the exhaust every 50,000 miles would you do it? Don't answer that :p
