How-To: Replace OEM Antenna (in-fender)

Disclaimer: This is how my antenna replacement worked for me and my 2007 SR5 4 cyl 4x4, your truck may vary! If in doubt, head to the dealer and ask for your specific diagram!

Hello! As I couldn't find any good pictures before I attempted this myself, I thought I would type them up to assist anyone else out there. What follows is how to replace your Antenna (the part in your fender) with a OEM replacement.

Here is what you will need:
-Part #

$66 86300-04070 Toyota Genuine Antenna Assembly with Hold

86300-04070 (a new antenna) (#1 below)
-Part #

$12 86396-04040 Antenna Nut

86396-04040 (a new screw down bezel nut) (#4 below)
-Part #

$28 86392-04040 Antenna Ornament

86392-04040 (a new bezel) (#3 below)
-Part # 90189-A0002 (grommet screw) (Only required if you break the clips when they come out of the fender well)
-Part # 75396-35020 (blue fender clip) (Only required if you break the blue clips when removing the fender flare)

(something that was pointed out to me; the antenna mast is the part above the fender, or part #2 below)

So when I noticed a nasty stain going down the side of my tacoma, I noticed this: Super corrosion and a loose antenna bezel!

Further investigation revealed the screw down bezel nut had corroded in place, making normal removal impossible. (At this point I had to drill out the bezel & bezel nut, but you might be able to unscrew yours)

Here's that pesky bezel nut! (at least what's left of it)

When you get to this point drilling, stop!

Here's what a new antenna head should look like, and my old one

Our next step is to get the fastening plugs out of the fender in order to access the antenna. Here is what the plug looks like, so you know what you're dealing with.

This is the front passenger wheel well, remove your mud flap if present, and gently work out those plugs. You will have to pull up the fender flare, they are held on by 10 cent clips, just buy some new clips and get that flare out of your way. One the flare is out of the way, you can peel back the wheel well liner, and get to the antenna.

A "gotcha" screw that I didn't notice until I broke a clip or two is here, fully under the body, on the very edge of the fender.

Here is a shot of the retaining plugs out (you can see the holes where they connect to the fender) and the bottom of the antenna. The wiring goes into your cabin at that rubber plug. You will need to take out that screw to remove the mast, but don't pull on the wires just yet! Don't worry about the rubber plug where the wires go into your cabin, your OEM replacement should have one attached already.

Remove your glove box, the sides flex allowing you to slip the retaining stud out, and take out the screw holding up the trim piece (and remove said trim piece) here:

Remove the trim piece covering your front pillar by prying up the pieces covering these bolts, then removing the bolts in question.

Here is the trim piece coming away, and you can see the wiring that your antenna connects to (part #5 in the 1st diagram) coming out from the dash area. there is a detaching connector in the wiring that our replacement will plug into.

Here (center, out of focus, sorry!) is where the wiring enters your cabin, seen from the glove box area. Also out of focus is a retaining clip connected to the mast's wiring that you will have to remove.

There is a second identical clip on the mast's wiring, before the detaching connector, here by where the pillar cover touches the dash area. On mine I had to cut it, allowing part of the clip to fall into the body... ugh.

Now that the 2 clips are out, remove the old mast and put the new one into the hole in your fender, using the hook, attach the bottom screw, run the wire into your cabin, and attach the clips & connector!

Now add your new bezel and screw down the bezel nut.

I used this watch tool, a couple bucks at walmart, to both pry up all retaining clips and to tighten the bezel.

Button up your wheel well & fender and you're done! You just saved yourself about $200 in labor

The only thing I have run into is that I can't get the stain from the corrosion off of my truck! Let me know if you have any thoughts!

I did this replacement several years ago, think i even referenced this thread…so thanks for that!

However, the real problem here is a poor design from toyota that quickly results in galvanic corrosion causing poor reception, stains, etc.

I ended up switching to fiberglass fenders about 2.5yrs after i replaced the antenna. When doing so i found the corrosion on the antenna to be the same or worse than it was originally. I didnt even bother to re-install the antenna (usually listening to satellite or Spotify anyways). But i do miss having the local stations sometimes…

Moral of the story, someone should step up and design a better antenna!

I wonder how well reception would be if the antenna was tucked out of the way in the headliner?

Does anyone know the part # for the actual antenna mast? Didn't see it posted in this thread anywhere.

Have to do the same, my boy's antenna broke off in the car wash today.

I worked patiently on the snapped-off antenna problem and was blessed/rewarded with a cheap and easy fix.
Using a snap-punch, the right size screw extractor with a cobalt drill bit to match, and a little cutting oil, I got the broken piece out, and screwed in a look-alike generic antenna.
I only needed to drill about 1/4" into the stud, and I threw me off when the bit grabbed and the piece screwed about another 1/2" down into the antenna mount; but I was using an appropriate slow speed of about 250RPMs with firm but very straight downward pressure, and stopped after about 1/8" depth to flush chips and apply more cutting oil. When I firmly tapped the extractor into the cleaned hole with a small hammer, I could tell it was biting into the stainless spring steel well, and it unscrewed the stud easily.
I highly recommend this procedure as your first try for a broken antenna repair if the fender mount still looks good. You, too, may just be able to avoid taking the fender & trim apart. Picture of tolls below. You can see that even thought the drill went a little off-center, it did the job because I didn't drill in very far, and the threads inside the mount weren't damaged.

Ordered the exact drill bit and extractor as above a week or so ago. Have sprayed penetrating fluid in the antenna base a few times since then while waiting for the parts to arrive. Me and my son removed the broken antenna stud from his truck today. 2015 with 135,xxx miles. Followed the process above and it worked like a charm. Slow and easy, took our time, and it came out with no fuss.

So, I've been putting off replacing my antenna for a few years since is was damaged by a falling branch, and I found a stubby antenna that I liked, and thought this would be a fun, easy, and quick project.
I found this thread and a video before I started on it, and I'm glad I did - had to cut off the original "antenna ornament" as it had fused with the base of antenna assembly... Picking up the replacement parts (antenna assembly, antenna nut, and "ornament") tomorrow, oh how I love removing the stupid plastic clips and rivets...
