I have a 2006 Tacoma, 83000 miles, I love it. Bought it in 2015, runs great but recently found out from my mechanic that the frame is very rusted with a big hole in one spot (see photo). Local dealer says they can't help, it was rustproofed in 2014 under a recall so they say Toyota has done all they can. I have a call into Toyota's regional customer service rep but I'm not holding out much hope for a new frame. I don't think it makes sense to shell out $5000 bucks or more (guessing) for a new frame so that's no good.

I can't sell it like this, so I may have to scrap it out. What is the best way to do that and be sure it really gets scrapped? I'm afraid if I take it to a junkyard someone there will put a For Sale sign on it and someone else will buy it.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If it's a 4.0L and the truck was built after December 2005, a lot of people would want that motor.

I use to know all the details on the frame campaign, but not anymore. If they won't replace the frame you can always get a competent welder to patch the frame if it's not rotted in other areas as well

You would make more if you put some time into parting it out, then scrap.

You're going to get 1k for that thing at the scrap yard don't do it.

If I were you I'd fight hard for a frame replacement from Toyota or just pay to get one done. Yeah it'll cost you 5k but then you have a truck that will run forever and be more reliable than anything else you can buy right now for $5k.

My uncle just had his frame replaced on his 2003 Tundra with 300k miles on it after the dealer told him his frame was bad. Fight hard with Toyota corporate

Ummmmmm go to a different dealership and inquire again fight them on this. My truck had the initial rust proofing done and I still got a new frame last yr. My dealership was a dream to work with and really did me right. Also you could take it to a fab shop and have them cut and section the frame where the worst rust is and save those parts of the frame with some new steel. That was going to be my move if I hadn't of gotten a new frame. BTW my new frame if I were to of paid the dealership would of been over 15g Toyota paid them over 13g you get a lot more than a new frame.

Toyota will not put a new frame under an '06 at this point. The time for '06 Tacos originally sold in the US ran out January 31, 2019. '06 Tacos originally sold in Canada ran out on July 21, 2019. If you didn't have it inspected and submitted to Toyota corporate by that date, you're SOL.

Just to add, frame replacement is like $14k. I wouldn't even consider that as an out of pocket option.

Just put the whole truck on eBay for auction, lots of people will buy it for the parts.

All depends on the in service date the only arbitrary date was x # of years past the lawsuit deal which would be in May. If the in service date is a longer term than the # of years past the lawsuit they go by the longest time frame. Plus if the dude argues with Toyota USA enough and is willing to argue his point they will take care of him there have been some cases of them extending the time to guys like the OP
Kinda what I was thinking. Even a junkyard wouldn't give up much more than that.

I thought the rustproofing carried a warranty. As in if they put the rustproofing on the frame and it still rotted they would replace the frame via the warranty on the rustproofing. Plus It’s not like it wasn’t filed as a problem to Toyota while the frame replacement period was still in effect.

Get a local fabricator to cut out the old rust and replace that section. Shouldn’t cost more than 1K.
I would not scrap the truck.

I wouldn't even consider scrapping a truck just for that. Repair it.
