Great write up, next time I'll do this myself and not pay the dealer $100.00 to do it.

Great write up! Helped a lot until.....the toothbrush I was using snapped off :annoyed:and went into the intake! After several attempts at different things, and short of removing the intake, I got lucky and sucked it out with a Shop-vac! :bananadance:

I plan to do this pretty soon. Has anyone removed the rest of the plastic intake manifold to clean it out as well?

I was bored and felt like tinkering so I cleaned my throttle body and MAF. It was only 15,000 since I last cleaned them, so they were pretty clean.

I didn’t notice a TB gasket anywhere. Where on the TB is it located?

I did this yesterday while I was in there changing the valve cover gaskets. This along with the new spark plugs that I installed seem to have cleared up some hesitation and made it run smoother all around. Could just be a placebo effect after spending 6 hours under the hood but I'll know for sure after my long commute to work today.

Theres a rubber gasket that sits in a groove on the surge tank where the TB attaches. I did not change it.

    Thank you.

This is precisely the reason I read through 20 pages of "Dude I just did what you did and the same thing happened to me!"

Appreciate the pointer. Was on the fence until I saw this.

Thanks! Great Writeup. I removed and cleaned the MAF and allowed that to dry while cleaning the throttle body. I have 158k miles and am sure that was the first time it was done. TW is an excellent resource and I’m enjoying all the maintenance I’m doing in my free (corona) time. Stay safe everyone!!!

Great write up. I have a suggestion instead of using wire. Small bungie cords. Attached is a photo. Feel free to use in your write up. Much easier IMHO.

So I finally got around to doing the MAF and throttle body cleaning today. 207,142 miles and never been done before. Both were pretty damn clean. Used CRC brand TB cleaner and MAF cleaner. No gunk or build up at all. Pretty surprised since most everyone here seems to say theirs were dirty even at much lower milage.

I've used Toyota factory air filters, NOT oiled K&N filters, so I expect to see the same. I'm approaching 100K miles, so I'll probably do my MAF and throttle body cleaning next spring. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of "oiled" filters.

I cleaned my MAF and throttle body at 60k and they didn’t need it.

That is a really good point (oiled vs non-oiled air filters). Mine was the standard non-oiled filter since new. Guess that makes all the difference. If I knew how clean it was going to be even after 207k miles, I would not have bothered with the cleaning.

This is a great tutorial. I cleaned the MAF sensor and Throttle Body this past weekend. Also changed the air filter while it was apart.
    upload_2020-12-3_15-45-16.jpg

I removed the MAF entirely and used the FJ video example. Even with a JIS screwdriver, the screws didn't turn easily with screwdriver skipping a few times. I had read that they could be replaced by M4x10mm screws. The threads are not compatible with my 2013. I still want to change them out in a future cleaning.
    upload_2020-12-3_15-49-51.jpg

I pulled the throttle body out completely. Much like Richard Simmons on a biscuits and gravy bender, the last 46K miles of Kroger gasoline had taken its toll. I manipulated the valve but was careful not to rotate to full extreme. It cleaned up well following the recommended process.

After re-installation I experienced the same high idle situation others described. It returned to normal after a little over 10 miles of travel. I was really surprised how responsive the engine was. I had recently moved to an area with lots of small hills to drive. The transmission would seem to hunt severely for the right gearing at moderate speeds. I started using 4th (overdrive off) around town. After the cleaning I can now use overdrive and it will hold gearing much better.

If you have any hesitation on acceleration, poor cold idling or unexplained decline in gas mileage then this procedure can probably help you and with the document provided is very approachable. Easily +5hp and younger women find me more attractive now.
