truly impressed by the ease and results of this cleaning. Drove her around town and found the throttle to be far more responsive. Cheers!

Replacing my water pump this weekend. Going to clean the throttle body also since I will have coolant drained and everything taken apart. Should be fun!

    Good write up Sean!

Thanks for the great write-up Sean! I attached a couple of pics because many of you doing this aren't running stock filters. I've got the stock SR5 intake and still had my secondary charcoal filter still installed (notice past tense here because it looked dirtier than any air filter I've ever replaced and can't imagine the airflow restriction when it's that bad). Over 7 years and 118K miles later, the TB and MAF were quite dirty.

One other thing I would recommend based on some of the comments is to remove the MAF to clean it. The backside looked completely clean, whereas the front side subject to the air flow hitting it was caked with the same oily dirt as the TB!

Front and Rear (in that order) TB pics attached.

Love the write up. I didn't read this before hand while doing mine. Here is a couple of things I do differently from the OP. Same work basically, but I'm just weird.

    1) Instead of disconnecting the negative terminal, I just simply remove the ECU and EFI fuse.

    2) I take out the whole intake duct (from fender well to TB). Once removed, the internals are cleaned with a 50/50 mix of de-greaser/water.

3)MAF sensor is removed and cleaned. I clean it with MAF sensor cleaner and let it sit under a light during the rest of the process. Don't put it back in until the everything is back.

4)I reach in far as possible on the intake manifold to clean with a microfiber brushed, dabbed with TB cleaner.

    5) All electrical sockets (MAF sensor and drive-by-wire), are cleaned with electrical contact cleaner.

Mine looked similar the first time I did it before doing the write up. When I did the write up it was my 2nd time doing the cleaning & wasn't that dirty.

    Thanks.

Over the years I would run into write ups on something , I
had never done before. & what the writer was saying didn't make
sense to me. So I saw a red boxtop & thought it would be a good
tool for showing every nut & bolt. I have the arrows in my tool chest,
    for the next write up.

Thanks for this write up. I just did mine today at 40,000 miles and almost six years. Cleaned maf sensor and throttle body with the products in the original post. I took the maf out and the throttle body off to clean. Also put a bottle of techron fuel system cleaner in the tank. Been getting 16 mpg around town. Hoping to improve that a little. My throttle body was not really dirty but I feel better having cleaned it. Thanks again!

Followed the directions to a "T" and it was a piece of cake. My throttle body was nasty! about 90K on it and it was the first time it had been done. The truck was starting to idle rough so I thought I'd give it a shot and see if it would improve the rough idle.

Thanks for the write up. Next time I'll take off the TB but i didn't want to stand outside in the cold any longer than necessary.

It may at first. After driving it a bit, it will settle down. Also best to disconnect the negative battery cable, wait a few minutes then reconnect.
