So I attempted this last night... Not so good. I did a little too much sanding of the clear coat... So the rubbing compound didn't do a damn thing. So now there's just scratches all over. Is it possible to sand it back down through the niteshade to just start over?

I could... But the problem is that the rubbing compund worked its way into those tiny scratches, thus leaving a whitish appearance to the finish . It was definitely an fmylife moment. I am more than likely going to just wet sand back down to the taillight and start over.

Yea the best thing to do is start over.

Did you wet sand the clear with 2000? There shouldnt be deep scratches after the compound and plastx.

And remember when wet sanding the clear coat. MORE STROKES, LESS PRESSURE.

Well, I redid my lights tonight. Just took some elbow grease to get back down to the light... They are MUCH BETTER now. Look like they are supposed to. Firefighter, the whole deal is that if you botch it, you can just start all over!

Well then you spent $60 on materials. A shop will do it for that much and no labor for you =]

No, I spent around $40 on materials but I got doubles of everything just in case. I still have my stock 06' tails that are in perfect condition and I was thinking that I was going to tint those first to get a test run until I get it right and then sell them on TW. Then once I got the procedure down, I will tint my 2010's.;) Not only that, I want to do the mod myself for the satisfaction of saying, "I did them myself!" I dunno, sounded like a good plan to me cause my stock 06's are just sitting in a box in one of my spare bedrooms.

Just finished up this mod. All together I'm in it for ~$35 and 3 hours of time. I ended up only doing 2 coats...but apparently I am a bit heavy handed with the nightshade portion and it ended up almost blacking them out completely. I was a little worried as I was going through the second round of sanding that I was going to not like them once I got them on the truck...but I gotta say a really dark tint (not blacked out totally) with the timberland mica is pretty sexy imo. I will post pics later, so I can show some day/night shots. Thanks again for the write up.

edit: Can anyone guess what I forgot to do?

Well....got done tinting my 2010 OEM tails last night and I really like them!!:D Note: The Nite Sahde stuff is "not" meant to give you a slight tint look. I hit it with 1 super light coat and it still cured out kinda medium. I mean they still look great but just remember, they will cure about 2 times darker from what they looked like when you first sprayed them. The lights actually look darker then what they really are in person in these pictures. But you guys get the idea!!!:D
