Hey All , My 4x4 has not been engaging on the fly . When this happens I stop the truck switch it back to 2 HI and shut the truck off. Before starting the truck again I switch it to 4 Hi . When the truck starts it recognizes it and goes into 4Hi. Anyhow has anybody had this type of problem?

So here's the thing guys, my 4x4 engaged itself a few days ago & I can't get it out, I was told it was my actuator. I would love to find a cheap way to fix it myself but I don't have a manual for my truck to locate it. I think I found it but I'm still unsure. Any guidance?

I might be wrong and I dont have the time right now but.......did you look through this thread? There has to be some kind of pictures that will show you. If you look under the front of your truck on the clamshell its the part that has the only wiring harness connected to it.

If you need to drive it and get it out of 4wd, you can just remove the actuator off the front diff (four 10mm nuts) and slide the sleeve to the unlocked position manually. If none of that makes sense find a hillbilly to translate, they will know what to do.

I've been looking through everything & googling pictures but of course they only show the part & not where to find it. I will definitely get under my truck today & look. I hope it's a simple "do it yourself" type of fix. Since I live out in Hawaii I have to ship parts in. I was quoted just $500 for the part not including shipping

I understand it, but is it as easy for an automatic?

I changed mine with a little time spent laying on the ground it was carefully changed for just the cost of the part.

Hawaii is loaded with yotas. They should have a surplus of parts.

i did this job today as i just had my rear actuator (transfer case actuator) replaced at a hefty penalty and my 4x4 still wasn't working properly.
the job took a few hours solo with just hand tools but i had to make trips out being i didn't have 10mm and 12mm hex drivers. the job really isn't that bad overall a leaves a pretty gratifying feeling behind knowing you don't have to replace the part just yet.

    Hey everybody,
I've got a 2006 tacoma that started sporadically not engaging in 4wd a few months ago. It would work sometimes, then not work for a week or two. Whenever it doesn't work the 4wd light doesn't come on at all. Took it to a local mechanic and he said it was the actuator and replaced it with a new one.
It worked for a few days then went out, the local mechanic had it for a day on two separate occasions and would get it to work. Then a day or two later it would stop.
Then I took it to the toyota dealer and it was the same story. They said they had never seen a truck do what mine was doing. They had it for three days and it stopped working a few days after I got it home.
I took it back to the original mechanic and he returned the actuator for another new one, and it stopped working after a few days.
He's done dealing with it, so I thought someone on here might have experienced something similar. What else should I be looking at if it's not the 4wd actuator. And the 4wd light just doesn't come on?
    Thanks!

Hey Cochise Did you get an answer to your query re: not being able to shift to 4wd on the fly but if you put it 4wd before starting, it will engage? I have the same problem wit an 08 Tacoma.

Did this over the weekend. A couple of things. My two top bolts were seized and needed to be drilled out. Second I believe their is a spring or something that popped out that I lost. I did solder it back so i confirmed this was my issue. I plan to go ahead and purchase a replacement. Can someone confirm for me this is the correct part number 4140034013.

Or is this the correct one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOYOTA-FRON...E-TOYOTA-/331473649054?_trksid=p2054897.l4275

    Thanks.

This post looks like is going to solve my problem since I've got the exact same symptoms some of you are describing.

I am having some trouble removing the ADD, I removed the skidplate to have more room and the two front diff brackets, however I still cannot make it up there to remove the top two bolts, Should I pull down the front diff or do I need to remove something else?

I read on an Fj forum to remove the mounting nut in the frame cross member behind the diff is this required as well for Tacomas?

    Thanks for the help

The top bolts are hard to get to, but I was able to remove them without taking anything else off. Just take your time and curse the hell out of it.

The good news are that I was able to remove the ADD with not a lot of trouble, the bad news is that when I opened my ADD looked pretty bad, I tried to clean it and solder the two connectors, Unfortunately that did not solved my problem and I still cannot engage 4LO and keeps blinking when in 4HI.

Does your front driveshaft spin in 4hi or 4lo? If not, start looking at your tcase actuator.
