You don't drive like me . I want my truck spooled . If it was 1984 again I'd pull the axles drop the center section and Lincoln Lock the thing . Reality is it's 2016 and I bought a new Toyota that said TRD Off Road on the side . With that being said I want to Off Road the thing. This safety shit should be able to be disabled when I want. Instead I'm sitting here arguing about a button you press or hold for three seconds and hope something really neat happens.

I'm not worried about getting stuck, I got that part. What I'm talking about is a locked rear end in 2 wheel drive that will rotate through corners like a trophy truck while at high speeds with full power. For some of us this is a lot of fun, just because something's new that doesn't make it better. I get that it's better on tight technical trails but it sounds like not so much fun down in Baja.
When someone tells me what I need or should be doing it let's me know that they aren't grasping the concept, I think the Toyota engineers missed the mark big time in this sense. I've owned a small Toyota truck of some kind or another since 1984 but that string might be in jeapordy, all for the want of a locked rear in 2wd. Maybe the answer is to pull everything off the rear end throw in a locker and disable the ding ding ding bell but I'm afraid the computer would shut down the whole shebang.

You speak the truth... thanks for typing it so polite like. I was going for the same thing but I decided to delete my post because I had a few F bombs and things. But I will add . My truck has gotten stuck in shit that I could get through in a 99 Astro van. Just saying.

i guess the problem is that this makes 100% total sense. probably to almost all of us.

just not in a society where makers get sued due to user error. yeah, i'm from the 60's and remember the 70's, suffered the 80's, clenched my cheeks in the 90's, and... crap i don't even know what to say about now but i probably don't gotta

You buy a $35,000 truck to take you places and last. The Tacoma 4x4 Off Road does just that. To pay that to just do donuts and spin tires seems a foolish waste of money. Get something made before VSC, and cheaper, too.

Gee Dad ... that sure is sound advice. But I use my truck for Search & Rescue . I drive in sand. In sand you need momentum and wheel speed. Both of my trucks were 41k. I deserve the option to disable all safety settings . Thanks for your concern.

I just had two fascinating conversations... one with a Toyota tech that says ... I won't be able to do anything I want to do because of the computer.
Then my second conversation was with a fellow that has a stand alone wire harness that's plug and play with no butchery and uses all OEM style connectors and switches . The only downside is you have to remove it for it to return to normal functions. Cool but not exactly what I wanted to here. I'm waiting for a call back to see what , and how Camburg did whatever they did to the Mint Taco.

Let me know how this goes, currently contemplating a similar line of reasoning to yours, that being trying to end up with a truck that I can run fast over sand and dirt, and bring back onto the street without having to do a bunch of crazy things to avoid blowing up the diff, or suffering in the everyday driving department.

I would honestly think that if money were no object in the equation that SOMEBODY would be happy to take my money, but so far all my inquiries have ended with some form of 'we can't do that to a 2016 yet'. This leaves me, as you, much less than satisfied.

It might just be me so feel free to totally ignore this, but wouldt the simplest way to achieve what you are looking for be to add a detroit truetrac LSD, and then find a simple work around for the traction control system? That way you leave auto LSD off, have a mechanical limited slip running full time, and then once you push either the switch you wire up or disconnect the traction control system then you can spin tires all day, right?

i wondered this myself (mech lsd). it's a compromise, but a fair one for some of us... if it can work simply.

Exactly... Just gotta figure out if there is a way to wire in a switch for TRAC off. that would be awesome because then its all user-controllable from the drivers seat rather than pulling a fuse, plugging/unplugging a wire, etc

Sand driving is my primary use of 4WD.

This truck with TRACtion control (TRAC OFF mode since 2012) drives better in sand then my 2005 Tacoma without it.

You don't want to spin tires in sand, that moves you down not forward. That's why we deflate tires, to not spin them but to float on the sand.

You're assuming I'm traversing sand at less than ~25 mph... Im talking about running through sand at 80 or 90 MPH... At speed there is more than enough momentum to continue going through the sand, Im simply talking about having a way to change direction on sand haha. If you're going 80 or 90 and try to turn and traction control interferes you're going to get almost no power through the corner and will bleed off tons of speed. If you can freely spin the tires up you can preserve some of that momentum and lose less speed. Also, I do just as much driving on land if not more than I do having fun off road
