Any one have any idea how the new 6AT will work?
Can we assume it will still have a torque converter w/ lock-up?
In what gears will it lock-up? 4, 5, and 6?

My '02 only locks up in 4th over ~48 mph.

What's normal these days? Lots of autos with clutches now. (Our Audi; Jeep Cherokee I rented.)

    Edit: not Cherokee; Ford Focus

Maybe I'm missing something; if they have TCs why do they take so long to go anywhere when I put my foot down from a stop unlike every 'old' auto I have ever driven? (Audi is CVT, no dual clutches)

    Edit: unlike

You are telling me my Audi 2.0T CVT does does not have a CVT like it said on the window sticker? They've been lying about that for 10 years now... damn foreigners!

Mine is A4, but several models have the CVT (Multitronic).

"Another potential power-sapper is a torque converter, which the Multitronic avoids by using two oil-cooled multi-disc clutches, one for forward, one for reverse. Controlled electronically, the clutch provides a bit of "creep"..."

I'm sure this CVT is not the only transmission that uses a clutch. Since CAFE is ramping up energy wasting TCs might soon be endangered.

They are phasing it out for more efficient trannys. Once you are going >20 it is awesome. If you need to pull out in front of someone time stands still until the clutch is fully engaged.

My bad, Cherokee had other issues. It was the Ford Focus I rented with auto clutch.

All bolt ons + tuning solution. Capable of running high 13's.
    Correction

Not all the autos in Audi are DCT. Some all plain old ones. For example SUVs or the A8.
Audi stopped offering CVT sometime around 2014.

The transmission engineer said earlier that the transmissions 6th gear is just a taller over drive gear. I asked if it was getting a taller over drive gear because the rear ends are all 4.1 ratios now and he said that is probably why. He said he thought gears 2 through 5 had changed a little, but could not confirm.

He really didn't confirm anything except a picture

My dad's Nissan Altima had a cvt. I hated the way it down shifted when you took your foot off the gas. I like a car that coasts unless I force down shift it

But it had, what felt like, shift points. I read that Nissan didn't have a good cvt at the time so they put a bunch of rpm numbers where it would 'shift' instead of being continuously variable.

Audi still sells CVT (Multitronic). It is really good except it uses a clutch instead of a TC. All I'm saying is that an automatic (single, dual, or CVT) can use a clutch instead of a TC. Now that we got that out of the way...

Back to the original subject... I've never driven the current 5AT; so, can anyone tell me when it locks up? 4th and 5th?

Now that you mention it... I drove some cheap Nissan or something with a CVT that sucked (maybe 6 years ago). It behaved like an atv, I think. When you put your foot down it revs; when you lift rpms go down. The Audi does that to a lesser extent; but the engine is so smooth and quiet you can hardly notice. Plus, it has so much low-end torque you rarely need more than 2000 rpms (max tq from 1500). You can go 45 mph @ 1000; 90 @ 2000.

My wife's Subaru Forester had a cvt and I like it.
