Any insight on my previous post of tuning vvti for MPG's not necessarily max power/torque?

    Sorry Ben!

You could improve economy with less advance, but you’re going to neuter the output. I suppose if you’re making an economy map for the sole purpose of sipping fuel and reloading a normal VVTi map for general use it would be helpful. Is that what you were thinking? Or were you thinking about tailoring a specific region in the map for economy and leaving the rest in a "normal" state? Just curious what you were thinking.

I'm often thankful for how "easy" to tune these things are, but the simplicity does have its drawbacks. When really trying to squeeze out the last ~10% of power and efficiency, the single 3D map for cam angle is a limitation (among others). Being forced to a single specific angle for a given rpm/load forces a choice between power and efficiency.

As much as I was frustrated with my Ford's strategy for engine management on the Coyote platform, and it’s 26 different ignition maps/cam angle tables, Fords HDFX (High Degree of Freedom Executive) is a strategy that dynamically blends between a number of calibrated tables (such as cam angle advance) for a 5D map. With this system, you can have the best of both worlds of economy and response at the same RPM/Load due to the blending of maps that are setup for fuel efficiency, emissions reduction, peak output, best drive-ability, and smooth idle.

Not to crush on the Ford system too much here, it does show the limitations of a simple 3D map quite readily even for simple (and dated) engine like ours.

haha no worries, I know you are a busy man.

My thinking was to look at some datalogs of crusing at highway speeds and see what loads n rpms I was seeing and tailoring that specific region and leave the rest of the map at a "normal state" (i did play with greater advances at higher loads and saw a huge increase in KR so backed those down to close to stock numbers).

I feel as though under nicer conditions (flat driving, no wind, not loaded down) where you simply have to spin the motor x rpms to go the needed speed, if you could reduce the amount of air in, you could potentially use less fuel and also potentially increase spark due to the reduced dynamic compression ratio.

I might play with this some.

That was kinda my thought process, 40% and under load would be less than the norm.

Where is the how-to post for the VCM software? There was one as I recall, but now can’t find it via search.

Give me a shout when you guys are ready, I use ND4's trans tunes as standard fare in my tunes so if you want it included I'll get you sorted.

I went ahead and bought the pro version. My rationale was that I wanted as much data as possible for fine tuning and data logging.

And now we're stickied in the Performance & Tuning section.

Makes a lot more sense. :)

I thought about it, but I don't think there is much available for Tacoma with the Pro. Maybe worth it with a supercharger. I'm hoping the 5th Gen 4runner will be fully supported.

@JustDSM I just did a 1500 loop through death valley out to Utah and back, and finally loaded the most recent tune you sent me a while back with so called "experimental" vvti settings right before I left.

It felt maybe a little less powerful off the line, but pulling grades at high elevations in the 2-3k rpm range was amazing. I could hold 5th lockup and afrs in the 14s at 70mph in places I never would have expected.

Is this just cold weather or does that jive with what you expected?

In your VVTi test file, I would have expected an improvement off idle/off the line. However, that's why we do some testing here and there to validate/proof settings. :) I do appreciate you checking that out for me. Your other observations were spot on with what I would expect however so that is great news!

Just to confirm this was your v1.2eng calibration correct?

Finally got my flash done. Although I think it’s version 11 since it has been awhile. I had to remove/bypass my MAF Cali, then got scared away by the bricking ecu’ s, then just sidetracked.

First write is still a pucker factor, and I kept getting “Controller Init Failed” messages at first. I finally did another resync of the interface, then it wrote it as it should. Write was quick and non eventful then and appears to be running fine.

Just need the latest and greatest now.
