    Hi gang,

I've noticed an oddity in my Taco, I wanted to ask and see if it's all across the 2nd gen trucks or just mine because it's a base model w/ manual controls.

When the selector is set for defrost mode, the recirc mode gets turned off so that it can only be in the 'fresh air' mode. I'd rather be able to close off the fresh air setting while in a defrost setting.

There's a simple wiring mod for that.

Toyota's in the 90's inhibited this. It's to prevent owners from fogging up in defrost mode. It's basically pointless.

I keep off defrost simply to stop the AC from kicking in.

If you're warming the truck, floor, fresh.
    Cooling, top panel vents, recirc.
Defrost, is forced fresh, ac on.

The mod I posted above fixes that, I did it to both the mode and temp actuators on mine so I could also have the temp knob on full cold without forcing max A/C.

I just find defrost to be inefficient anyways, so I never use it unless fogged. But I do like the idea of choice. Especially on a 2nd gen tacoma. They are the last of the simple trucks. Let the owner do what they want.

Guess they figure we are too dumb to kick the A/C on if the windows fog up so they do it for us but yea I hate that "feature", I was so glad when I found the mod to disable it.

Great idea and write up. I'm not sure if it will solve my issue though. I want to be able to select 'fresh air' or 'recirculate air' at will. When the knob is on the 'windshield ( defrost)' setting or 'windshield plus a tiny bit of air for your feets' mode, the controller for the fresh air/ recirc air will default to 'fresh air'. Around where I live, when I need to defrost the windshield I don't ant to inhale the stench of excessive diesel exhaust from all of the inbred rednecks with their 'tuned' bro-dozers.

Yes it will allow the A/C to be turned off in Defrost mode and also allow recirculate in defrost mode.

    I always hit the buttons.

I always keep it on recirculate to keep the critters out. :)

I read through the entire thread, towards the end someone figured out if the solid blue wire gets snipped at the plug, then tied into the pink wire, it allows for full control over everything. I was driving my 3rd gen 4runner tonight, I was in envy of the manually operated recirc/fresh air button.

Yea 09-15 models are different from 05-08 models, early models the wire simply needs to be de-pinned or cut late models it needs to be tied to 12v which is the pink wire.
On mine I de-pinned it, wrapped a short piece of wire around the pin, stuck it in next to the pink wire, and secured it with a zip tie so It can easily be reversed if needed. I'll snap a picture of mine tomorrow if I get time.
