I'll never understand what makes people think they can pull off shit like this, the fact he made it that far would actually be pretty impressive if it weren't so stupid.

Some time ago I got a call from someone I played hockey with that owned a 2010 FJ Cruiser, told me he got it stuck real bad and needed help. It was pretty late at night and he said to meet him in the morning at a friend's house with my truck and some equipment, so I did.

He takes me to where he got his FJ stuck and it's in a wash right behind a damn, on city property...in plain view of JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) about a mile away, for those in Pasadena area you know the wash I'm talking about.

To make things worse, he drove through a park to get there. His FJ was up to the doors in nasty city runoff water and wouldn't start. It had slid off a sandy ledge into the shallow water beside the damn. Told him there's no way I'm bringing my truck down there, so we walked down to it to assess the situation..and a group of city workers were there waiting with a couple police when we got to it.

He owned up to the whole thing and surprisingly the cops left, basically just said "it's up to you and the city to figure this out". City brought out a couple tractors and pulled him out, but his FJ was done from being in that deep water overnight. He had to get it towed home.

One of the city workers tells my buddy "what were you thinking?", he stupidly goes "I didn't think anyone would see me".

City guy - "JPL is right over there and they can see what's happening on Mars, you think they couldn't see your dumb ass?"

I haven't talked to him since, I should reach out and see what became of his FJ. What an expensive lesson

 hopefully they close the trails down that day so no unsuspecting mountain/dirt bikers get blown off the top of the mountain by mistake lol

I'm having horrible GTAV nightmares/flashbacks now. I see the scene from ET now, a bike flying in front of the moon....

Just me or did that recovery seem like a bit of a junkshow with too many cooks in the kitchen? Most of the dudes were just in the way and yelling, not actually pulling or helping.

Also thought the cameralady was annoying as hell talking about how they were risking their lives to get it out. With a peanut gallery that big I’d wager Half of them were there to see if it tumbled down the mountainside.

We did a similar recovery in college for a buddy that drove off the edge of a shelf road and told our him before we started ”we’ll try our best but no promises it doesn’t go down the mountain”

Here are the things that stood out to me:
    • team flags
    • everyone is wearing the same shirt
    • Every single one of those vehicles is strapped in. The anchor vehicles have anchors, which also have anchors. (not knocking the redundancy by any means, its just interesting)
    • quite a few of them are standing way too close to the winch lines.

This looks like less of a recovery and more of a "look how badass our club is" event. And because I think a little differently, I wouldnt want a recovery of that kind to be an official flag-flyin, shirt-wearing club event, out of fear that the club would be now associated with dumbass #1.

But mostly it's the "look at me" instagram shit that makes me dislike joining up with any clubs.

Also none of the winch lines have dampeners on them, that I can see...which I know not everyone does but it is a safe practice...especially when you have a lot of people standing near the winch lines

Very well said on all points!

    Edit:
I also thought it was weird they pulled off the front bumper which would push it further off the ledge opposed to the rear which would’ve pulled it back on. I feel like they would’ve needed a lot less people yanking on it to keep it from rolling if they’d done that.
