So I had a little accident with a trailer last night. The trailer came off the ball while loading. I know I’m an idiot, but now I have to fix it. So, my question is, what is the best option, do I: have this tailgate fixed? Do I buy a new tailgate from Toyota and have it painted? Do I buy a used tailgate off Craigslist etc? If I have it repaired/painted is there a big chance that the paint won’t match? Is there anything I should look out for when buying a used tailgate off a different year truck? (3rd gen obviously) oh yeah, here’s pictures...1241D5B0-5B7F-4931-BED8-F546294B6DD8.jpg

    Still stock completely capable!
I don’t know from experience but I would start by calling the local wreckers. See if any have one you could take. As far as paint matching I had a front 1/4 panel painted on my old truck and couldn’t tell
The difference. Go threw a good paint shop and it’s amazing what they can do! If you can’t find in wreckers look on the BST section of TW maybe someone building a Trophy truck bought a tailgate rack and have a extra one laying around you could get cheap. Dealer is a option but most likely the most expensive one! Good luck man! Nice to see these TG are pretty strong! Didn’t even go threw lol!

Also shit happens my friend! Anyone who gives you a hard time is a dick! This could happen to anyone! Hope you get it fixed cheap and fast! Good reminder to double check things!

If the tailgate still closes and is functional, maybe just leave it the way it is? Doesn't look too bad.

Then, if it gets more damaged from future use, no big deal. And, it's a continual reminder to secure the trailer.

Thank you! I’ll check it out. I found one on Craigslist for CHEAP! It’s from a 2018 in perfect condition. It’s Silver Sky Metallic, same as mine. There’s no difference in paint colors from 2018 to 2019 right?

There's different shades of SSM, which I've heard can be regional, but I've got a photo of my truck parked next to another truck and you can see the color difference. I purchased a cap that was SSM and was a different shade than my truck and would have been the right shade for the truck I parked next to.

In theory, you won't see it because the tail lamps block 90%, but you could always hold it up to the truck and see.

If the truck were 2-3 years older I'd drive it as is. On one that new I'd fix it. My son-in-law had a similar mistake about 6 years ago when he and my daughter borrowed my truck to pick up new furniture. At the time I was on the bubble about fixing it or leaving it. I decided that if I could find one from a scrap yard at a good price that was the right color I'd simply replace it.

I never did find one. Some were a decent price, but wrong color and to get them painted would go over budget. After a while I decided it wasn't that bad. Now, with a 13 year old truck it is just a character mark with a story.

Look on the bright side - at least you goofed while parked. Imagine what the damage would have been if it decoupled on the highway...

In the $350 range. Just the gate. No plastics or handles or camera/wiring.

The real question is.... how did you pop off the ball with the tongue of the trailer in the locked position... looks like you are running a ball that is too small. Change that ASAP.

Personally id try to hammer it out on my own and touch up with some paint or put a sticker over it and save the money.

It was an OLD trailer and the car we were towing was on a dirt trail. It was a Subaru Outback with a cracked tranny pan. Car wouldn’t drive so we had to get momentum and roll it onto the trailer. One thing led to another and the next thing we knew the tail of the trailer was on the ground and the neck was up in the air. It’s safe to say the trailer will never be used again.. lol
