    2011 DCSB TRD Sport.

Was in an accident where the other driver clipped my rear tire pushing it back and causing a lot of damage to rear end. Everything was practically replaced for precaution, including rear axle housing and differential.

I have been getting some weird noise/vibrations in rear end similar to post i have seen with people experiencing the same thing with the 08 and previous models having to add friction modifier.

So i think i have an LSD rear differential now. Went to change the oil today and noticed the use LSD oil only. Jacked it put the car in neutral and turned on back wheel heard something engage and both wheels are spinning in the same direction.

So if this is the case i cant believe they would put in the wrong rear end.

Could this possibly be a good thing ? I have no idea what i can expect with the electronic LSD it has plus possibly a mechanical LSD.

Take it back and ask them to verify the correct part number was installed.
The electronic diff is going to be tied into the ABS and traction control systems.

Changed oil and added friction modifier and the weird vibration I was getting while turning slowly is gone.

I would really be smiling if I got a free mechanical limited slip in my Sport Tacoma like that!

ETA: I think the electronics LSD will only kick in if the mechanical one doesn't. I don't see how it will be a problem unless the electronic tries to kick in first. or some situation where they're fighting against each other. Not sure...

lol, I was mad at first with the issues i was having, but i guess it all worked out for the best. If i didn't try and find out the problem and find the post about people having the same issue's with the mechanical differentials in the 08 and previous models that just needed friction modifier i would have ended up back at the dealer trying to let them figure out what the binding noise was and i could have possibly lost the mechanical diff.

Did some more research and i don't really see a reason for the electronic lsd to cause any issues with the mechanical if its technically working through the abs.

Feels great to have the truck back !

Any other way i could confirm without opening it up ?

Jack the rear end up so both rear tires are off the ground and spin one wheel. If the one on the other side goes the opposite direction you have an open differential. If the one on the other spins the same direction you have a limited slip.

This isn't always accurate. My 2000 Tacoma would spin both tires the same direction and it was an open diff.

Really? Why? If my truck had a mechanical lsd, i would be driving across state to see you right now!

A possible downside is more frequent diff fluid changes.

I believe the maintenance plan from the manual calls for a 30k mile fluid change for vehicles with mechanical lsd as regardless of normal use versus severe use. This may be due to the friction modifier breaking down because of shearing of the fluid.

In contrast, I think the plan suggests 30k mile change for e-lsd for severe use only and an extended fluid change for normal use.

Don't quote me on this, however. I am away from my vehicle and can't confirm the manual states this.

Yah, I read up on it and they said it doesn't necessarily mean you have a mechanical LSD if both tires spin in same direction. So now i'm wondering how else i could check without opening it up.

First thing i actually did. Both spun in same direction, but it seems like its not an accurate way of checking.

I'd just go ask the dealer... Maybe they thought all tacoma sports had lsd diffs even though it ended in 08'.

In the 5 years ive owned her ive never taken it off-roading.. I would like to sometime but nothing serious just to ride some trails and such. I rarely ever get into a situation that calls for me to lock the diff (and having the LSD would probly solve that problem before it happens)..I do it now and then just to cycle it and make sure it still works. I would much rather have a full time LSD that turns both.

You scored dude! I feel 08' was the last of the best, not that the newer trucks are bad ( there not) just more electronic garbage. Good deal, rock that mechanical rear for sure.

    Thanks ,
