My buddy back in high school had a wrangler and waved at every other wrangler. It's been a Jeep thing as long as I can remember.

I don't get a response most times when I waive at other Tacomas (or Toyotas in general). I got a waive back from a 1st gen who also had an ARB bumper one time. I've almost given up.

I wave at modded Tacoma's and 4runners, and they usually wave back. Pretty small community of off road Toyota's here though.

Sometimes I don't see them until the last second and I see that they were waving at me too late to respond!! :annoyed:

More of a general motorcycle thing...

Twenty five years ago non-Harley riders were bitching about Harley riders not waving back at them.

Whether it was a Jeep or motorcycle thing first I have no idea, nor do I care.

There is a pretty well known story about how Bill Harley and the davidson boys started it. I posted a couple references already.

The two-finger V wave began during WWII. Then it became a Jeep thing. When 2 GIs passed each other in a Jeep they flashed the V for victory sign, which had recently been popularized.

See here regarding the origins of V for Victory: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign

Apocryphal stories gain an air of authenticity through frequent repetition, but that doesn't necessarily make them true.

Not that it isn't possible that they initiated it, I'm just saying that links to someone retelling the story isn't a validation of it's authenticity.

It's as easy to find stuff claiming the origin was with armored knights:

    http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php?topic=238730.0
    http://www.cyclefish.com/forums/topic/38795

Doesn't make that story true either.

I mean, I knew a guy who swore up and down that he laid his bike down to avoid an accident... but that didn't change the fact that he locked up the rear wheel from improper braking technique. :D

Yeah, did he ride? I know a couple of guys who have told the same BS story. Usually followed by I quit riding because it's so dangerous. Posers.

As far as the wave goes. I started riding a CB350 in 1975. Back then, no one seemed to care what bike you were on, they all waved. Now, it seems to be brand specific. I got a CJ7 and most other Jeepers will wave. But don't expect the soccer mom in her shiny JK to wave at you
