Stuff I've read suggests your information is 10 years outdated. First gen DuraMax had a problem with leaky injectors. GM (finally) owned up to the problem and extended warranty to cover the issues as well as fixing the problem injectors and redesigning valve covers to make injector maintenance easier/cheaper.

By most unbiased accounts, the engine now has a very good rep., especially later gen's. There are even third-party mod's readily available that boost power substantially. Although you gotta be careful not to ruin emission controls, e.g., particulate filter, basic engine has proven more than capable of handling the boosted output.

There is a place near Sacramento that will do the swap, auto tranny only though. The guy at the dealer who did my head gaskets put one in his 91, it seriously pulls and the motor is considered one of the best Yota has made.

My rig gets a lot of attention from the dealers due to my power requirements and I have now heard from three of them in the past 6 months that possibly as soon as next year they will offer the 4.6 V8 in the Tacoma.

Most really don't need the 4.0 let alone the 4.6 but some of us who get paid to use our trucks actually put that power to use. Personally I would rather have 350-400 foot pounds of torque at 28-30 MPG in a diesel but 300 at the wheels via a blower seems to work fine, just not the gas consumption or greenhouse gas emissions end of it.

I did, it is 1,600 pounds heavier than a 4x4 ACC cab Tacoma and is flat out too big for a lot of the places I go. So I opted to boost my Tacoma, got more power and kept my size.

My rig when expedition ready is right at GVWR, maybe a tad more, or a tad less depending on minor changes, so having 300+ foot pounds of torque makes it safer to handle on and off road, always a happy gear.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I love my 2.7, but would go diesel any day of the week. They get better mpg and have far better power and torque delivery than any gas engine, diesel is the way to go. Why all cars are not diesel is beyond me, the technology is there to make it burn cleaner than gas, it is cleaner and more efficient to make. Virtually any car with a diesel engine will get better mpg. A friend of mine has a Jetta diesel and it is getting 50-55mpg on the highway! The gas version of that same car only gets around 40-45 I believe

A gas Jetta (2.5l) will get 26-30 highway. The 2.0T-FSI probably 27-32 IF you're REAL GOOD and keep your foot out of it as the turbo can drink gas worse than our 4L if you get to much in love with the zing. But either way it's nowhere close to 40.

i would not want a v8 in a tacoma it would be imo to much.

a torque rich little 4 banger diesel would be bad ass though you could actually tow shit and have as much pound feet of torque as a v8 in a truck thats what you want.

This almost gave me a boner

I had a 2.4D in South Africa. It had 245,000 km on it when I sold it, and I had not spent one penny on repairs. It just kept going. The best part was the low end torque. You could drive almost any gear at idle in the field without stalling.
The newer ones have 3.0 turbos. Those are just sweet.
Some posters above have said that if you want more power, get a Tundra or F250, but that is not what it is about. You don't always need a bigger truck, but still need the diesel for power, torque, mpg etc.

For those who say it will never come to the US; when I came here in 1997 I could not understand why Toyota did not sell the double cabs. The rest of the world had double cabs since the 80's. People said it would never sell - buy a full size if you want a crew cab. Well, they started selling them in 2001 and they are very popular, as you all know. I think diesels will be the same. Once someone start selling them, every other manufacturer will jump on the bandwagon. The rest of the world is doing it, why not here.

anytime someone tries to start a new thread on diesels, they need to be greeted by a pop up that says this

And that's too baf too. A little motor like the BMW 335d would rock. It's not too heavy and in US for cranks 265 hp & 425 lb. ft. torque. Both at low RPM. MPG would go up too.
